I don’t get why people want World of Warcraft to be realistic and not cartoon? I mean World of Warcraft as it stands right now far exceeds any modern MMO in terms of its longevity and its art style and design.
I must ask, “who are these people?”
Far as I know everyone who plays WoW is pretty happy with how it looks. Even classic players are more than content with their old tired blurry graphics. So I say again, who ARE these people?"
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Well we already had a tree burn so next is world
nobody wants it to be realistic, be gone with those people!
my biggest pet peeve is when people try to limit class/race combinations that can exist because it doesn’t make sense.
Bro, It’s a fantasy game.
Every now and again someone posts a topic about how they wish WoW used whatever flavor of Unreal engine is currently new.
You’ve made a few threads asking “Why do people X?” Why not ask those people directly?
oh yeah, graphics are cool and all, but that’d be my extent. I guess I just read the title and not the context.
actually not really, better graphics limits the playerbase and I don’t like that.
I think the Unreal Engine stuff is neat to look at, but I’d probably never play the game.
“Realism” works for Guild Wars 2 because it worked for the original Guild Wars, for example.
I think if they tried to unreal this engine they’d end up with hella uncanny valley elements. Just, everything is off. You get used to it cause it’s a toon. It’s not meant to ape real life, like, at all.
Guild Wars 2 does work but you look at a lot of the weird races (asura, sylvari) and they aren’t uncanny, they are more cartoony. The humans and etc are very much just plain people though, so there’s that.
Edit: Love me some sylvari and asura. Especially Asura I liked the engineer class (whatever it’s called, the one with guns and flamethrowers.) Not so much my “mage” Sylvari (whatever it’s called), it was called “dance around with lightning coming out of your daggers and call it a ranged class.” Which I ultimately passed on.
For the record I won’t say I’ll never go back to GW2. Some of my coolest online characters are there, they just don’t work as I feel they should.
Honestly, one of my favorite things in WoW is the surrealism (not realism).
All the rich colors:
- Purples and greens in Teldrassil
- Icy dark blue, grey and white gradient in Icrecrown
- Dark, golden hour sunsets and orange and brown shades in Swamp of Sorrows and Dustwallow Marsh
- Dark inky blue and black night in Darkshire
- Summery yellow and green in Pandaria’s Valley of the Four Winds
- Glowy lavenders and soft light blues in Suramar City
… the list goes on.
Then you look at photos, stills and youtube snippets of other games and they all look the same. Too bright. The floors are too shiny. The colors are too dim and drab… and they all aim for hyper-realism.
If I wanted reality, I’d just step outside. I can’t, for the life of me, get into other games because of this. No other games have WoW’s style, graphics and rich colors.
Isn’t WoW successful because of the fact that its graphics isn’t so demanding allowing players with older PC’s able to play the game?
Wow in unreal 5 would be amazing but it’ll never happen because it would require top of the line pc. Most of the player base does not have that.
the rate at which wow boosts its requirements per expansion is getting higher and higher. if you are playing on a toaster with a potato powering it then rip
Totally agree.
Let’s just role play this and some nerd found a way to get quantum computing to work on GPU graphic cards.
I would not want it to be used as an excuse to max out graphics so that now everything in WOW looks like real life or equivalent to it.
Heck no!
But if it made WOW look like the movie version of WOW then just maybe
but I want it to be my choice.
Imagine a gaming engine that let’s you theme your game.
Let’s say WOW is still alive and kicking in 2040 but the new deal is
the WOW devs gave a choice to run WOW to make the game look like the movie or toggle WOW back to the time it was released.
You talking about the people who drool over the Unreal Engine “fakeovers” people do for some zones?
100% looks great, but they never look like Warcraft.
People who want WoW to be that are insane.
Going for realism in graphics just makes a game age poorly, imo.
Eventually we will get there and it won’t but if you look at stuff from early 2000’s… it ain’t pretty.
The “cartoons” graphics certainly breathe high-fantasy life into the World of Warcraft.
If they ever come out with realistic graphics, I swear even if I get banned, I will find mod textures to “revert” the game back to those “cartoon” graphics by replacing the realistic texture files.
The current graphics are a staple of World of Warcraft and serves the immersion of the high-fantasy world Blizzard created.
