MoP: She does nothing all expansion. Has like one line in one part of the final raid exchanging words with the bloodelf leader.
WoD: Completely absent until the Legion pre-patch.
Legion: You finally think she’ll actually do something now that she’s, well you know… leader of the entire damn horde but nah man! Just watch her do something for 10 minutes in a starting zone and then don’t hear a peep from her again until yet another expansion pre-patch.
BFA: Oh finally some attention. Maybe she’ll do something cool. Nah actually she just turns into a glorified quest NPC while Nathanos does most of the work. Most of her legwork was all content in the prepatch. You get to spend an entire expansion watching her do absolutely nothing as both factions conspire against her. You can even be a willing spy and tell her exactly how to stop Saurfang and his traitors and she doesn’t do anything about it.
Like let’s face it. Where was she during any of these raids? Jaina got to be all over the 2nd BFA raid and had a big part in the 3rd one. Azshara actually had a bigger active role in the meat of the expansion than Sylvanas. Of all three warbringers she got dumped on the most.
To make matters worse look as far back as WotLK and you can see the most important objective for the entire forsaken get killed without their active participation beyond like two minor outposts. A city scenario that got removed from the game and the wrathgate incident which she wasn’t part of. All she physically does is get chased by Arthas for like 5 minutes and back to not existing.
So please by all means where is this “spotlight” coming from? The books or comics? Cause that’s where 99% of her development came from. She was such an inactive character she didn’t even get a proper undead model until like WotLK, they just slapped some nightelf model on her and called it a day for both vanilla and BC.
The only expansion where she got to do anything in was Cataclysm. Plus that was just some starting zones and more pre-60 content before she sat on the bench once the cata endgame zones and raids started.
I’m trying to understand if this thread is serious or trolling.
Well, wathever it is.
We all know the only reason Sylvanas is popular is wc3, any character in that game basicly gets free fan-points.
The thing that is funny is that she’s a character with not much redeeming qualities other than “died protecting her country”. Anything else she did, she did to survive.
Yes, like having the Alliance show up at Blight Central with zero plans for dealing with said Blight. You’d think Anduin would have been able to bring at least a couple Shaman to blow the Blight away from the battlefield.
Sylvanas: I don’t want to be killed so I can live forever.
Also Sylvanas: Better burn down this tree so as many people as possible want to kill me.
This one is hard to pin point, since there are so many different reasons complied together, and some are more impactiong on different people than other people, the reasons I dislike her could be different to the next eprsons reasons, but…:
She started out as a good character, we played through her tragedy seen what she became and she was something of a sympathetic antagonist/anti-hero. But since then her character has changed, probably different writers, but the character who a lot of peopleliked in WC3, is no longer the same Sylvanas we are presented with today, and a lot of people hate her for that. The changes in personality never seemed like a natural progression either it just, happened.
Her toxic fanbase, this puts a lot of people off liking her, the obnoxious fanboys who put her on an unacheivable pedestal where she is the best character ever. And a lot of people are put off the character by those obnoxious fans, I call this the ‘Mileena effect’ after the character in Mortal Kombat who’s popularity is taking a heavy hit to the point the creators don’t want to even put her in games anymore because of how toxic her fanbase is.
Retcons, noone likes them, and she seems to be full of them, with the whole “This was my master plan all along!” angle they are trying to pull by retconing things like wrathgate which just comes across as hamfisted.
Forced into the spotlight, Sylvanas worked well as leader of the forsaken because she had the warcheif to act as a foil to when her lack of morality was getting out of check, something she could bounce of and check herself and be “fine, guess he’s right that is a bit evil” Her character was always more of a under handed tactics, cloak and dagger type, and she lost all of that when they pushed her to the front with noone questioning her.
Moraly Grey, thats what she started off as, and thats what we were told she would be, but its not what we were given. It’s a case of false advertisment. We were told we’d get one thing yet were presented with something else and that is jarring.
Unwarented power. Sylvanas was never a power house, she wasn’t weak atall but her strength was always in her cunning and willingness to go to lengths other people wouldn’t. She couldn’t match someone like Thrall or Garrosh in a straight out fight, but then she never WOULD, she’d find another path. And yet now we have her outclassing Saurfang in combat, matching Malfurion in a 1v1 and one man taking down the lich king AND his army. It jsut feels unearned and feels like “writers pet” more than genuine progression of power.
PLOT ARMOUR! it’s through the roof at this point, admitadly not as bad as Nathanos somehow managing to hold his own against empowered Tyrande AND Malfurion in a 2v1, but still her plot armour is a detriment to her character at this point.
Battle for the “undercity” (confirmed that it was sylvanas that allowed the use of the plague and killed the other two that she knew they would do something in time)
On the books after she made the deal with the lich king valkyrs everything after that the horde or their own “forsaken” never mean anything to her except nathanos.
Legion scenario where her “I’m smart you’re not” writing starts where she left the alliance and Varian paid with his life because of her.
Stormheim and helya deal still unknown to date.
Stormheim cinematic.
Varimathras quotes that were 100% on the spot, he knew that she was going to betray all the horde for the jailer.
Basically ends there legion wise.
BFA
Before the storm book another spotlight
Cinematics
War of the thorns and the destruction of a world tree/night elves city
Everywhere cuz “warchief”
Until she killed saurfang she still got the spotlight on the old soldier on yet another cinematic.
On nzoth fight she’s part of the second vision of nzoth himself, yet again showing up making a “deal” with azshara.
Shadowlands
Out of nowhere she randomly goes to icecrown citadel to “challenge” the current lich king, turns out it’s another cinematic and one of the most iconic characters gets dumbed down for another plot starter from her.
On the next book again another spotlight incoming showing how she will attempt to murder bwomsandi and talanji.
I’m suspecting the pre patch will have yet another thing connected with sylvanas and we’re not out of the spotlight zone yet shadowlands isnt even here which clearly she’s has yet a bigger part to play on 9.2 I suspect.
So, were you saying? she had more than she deserves… I’m sick of her by now sure this is my opinion I’m sure others might share it or not.
Because her story became nonsensical within the span of one expansion with her making illogical decisions and suddenly gaining power that was not explained until the developers had to hand wave it off.
Yea, Nathanos is one of the worst Self Inserts there is. In fact he is almost so bad that me and my friends have been comparing him to a character from another anime who can:
instantly avoid the first attack of an opponent, instantly avoid the second attack. And avoid all other attacks of said opponent.
Then he also has a 100% guarantee to either parry all projectiles or for all projectiles to miss him.
He can walk on water
He can walk on clouds
He can walk on water vapor
He instantly can revive himself once if he gets killed
And he can wish for any power he wants
We came to the conclusion that Nathanos might be as bad if not worse than the dude in question because while he doesn’t have any of those powers. He’s still going up against some of the strongest WoW characters with zero issues.
Since Day One i fell in Love with my Banshee Queen. I don’t care what she did does or going to change it. She gave us purpose and…The Will of the Forsaken.
It’s a little bit like how I felt after watching the Warcraft movie; there’s a lot of plot holes and it feels like they’ve set things up for multiple movies, but I have no attachment to the film and no desire to find out anything.
They’ve lied multiple times. The end of Wrath was the perfect moment for her to die, her goal was achieved, she had nothing really to stay around for. I’m tired of the female characters in the story becoming evil, angry, or going borderline insane. We’ve stated multiple times that we’ve seen this story play out before, and got nothing but a cheeky little ‘tee hee, we promise it’s different!’
No, it isn’t, and it’s tiring. I don’t even hate her, I’m just tired and I agree with someone above me. I don’t hate her, I grieve for her. She’s just another overused trope at this point, and not even a creative one.
if the not the most popular character at one point until they ruined her completely after Wrath.
Now she is nothing but a crazy Narcissistic war criminal psychopath that acts like nobody could ever be her equal. God we better kill her in Shadowlands ourselves.
She’s genocidal, she’s one dimensional (she’s only had two purposes ever. The first was to kill arthas at any cost, the second was to survive at any cost.), and she’s gone from being pretty weak to god level powers seemingly over night.
I think we dislike the writing more than anything. The original version is what we remember. Her story should have ended with arthas. The current bogus version is bad fan fiction somehow making it into the game with no quality control.
