look at old school runescape yes it is free to play minus the sub option but a lot of ppl came back to play it and the game is fairly healthy. not the best example i know but its a start
I won’t be. Playing mage instead. I don’t have anywhere near the time to play that I used to, so I don’t want to mess with broken class balance and no dual-spec.
I’ve read a lot of these posts. I can speak just for myself, but I feel like blizzard and much of the retail public is vastly underestimating hwo popular this is going to be in the long run. I quit playing wow a long time ago, it got worse and worse. For the past 10 years I’ve been playing crappy games wondering why no dev teams could make something that captured my attention like classic wow/tbc did. Now it’s here. I have 2 accounts, taht’s 30/month blizzard was not getting before. I played in the stress tests…and I was shocked to discover not only was it good nostalgia…but my desire to play for years to come was riveting. I was surprised myself by how much I’m looking forward to this. I can honestly say I expect to play for years…If I max nax out 1 char I’d just do more…my only thought is like 'ok, what happens if people quit and I can’t raid with people to get the gear"…but I don’t know…
I played twinks back in the old days just for the sake of having a stable character with stable gear that wouldn’t “change” with the crappy expansions, but they even destroyed that over the years.
All I’m saying is…retail appeals to the tweens…but there is an ocean of players out there that no longer play, like me, that will return because of this. It’s already ahppening.
PS…you people saying people on private servers will never pay…it’s nuts how wrong peole can be. Of course they’ll pay, cuz the servers are officla, the gains are quasi permanent, with no threat of losing them. OF COURSE they’ll come.
Well thats reasonable. One of my biggest problems with most people who claim they want balance changes in classic is they have no way of doing so that does not include either mass homogenization, or basically trivializing other classes (with hunters, rogues and warlocks getting hit the hardest).
The trouble is that one man’s balance is another’s trivialization. If paladin and druid tanks were made to be viable (and occasionally superior) raid main tanks, the warriors would throw a fit.
Yeah welcome to balance.
and even private realms that are half done can hold half a mill players for their entire lifetime. i don’t think classic is in any trouble.
i personally know of 3 NEW classic players who have never played WoW at all, but only wanna do classic and refuse to even look at retail.
who can blame them?
Related to the topic, that’s where some of the Classic player drop off will come from. People who like WoW, but maybe never played Vanilla, will try Classic and discover that their favorite spec is pretty worthless (if it’s not one of the Chosen Ones), become discouraged and leave.
ps have never held anywhere near that number. accounts created is essentially meaningless on free games
i dont think classic will fail either, its setup for that to be almost impossible. hell we only like 3k people for a healthy server
So, nostalrious didn’t have half a mill players? google says they had almost a million players
they had over 800k registered players with 500k sticking around til it closed
Google says “An estimated 1.5 million players play on private vanilla servers”
thats not all correct no. accounts registered for a free game is useless data too, many of them never left the barrens or goldshire
there is not nearly 1.5 million playing on PS now, today either
its not even 100k for vanilla realms
Google says otherwise. google lists it as 1.5 million private server players for vanilla realms.
I agree about the registered accounts and many not making it far, BUT you are underestimating the amount who did. Nostalrious themselves claim half a mil stayed with them til it closed. I don’t doubt them.
the thing with ps is they are extremely loose about what they call “active players”
i play on ND myself ftr. they consider you active if you log in at all over a 3 month span and they claimed 250k this quarter. they usually have 3-10k online
Fair enough. I admit i don’t touch private servers (because i’m an anti piracy guy, and because i don’t wanna risk my toon deleted one random day)
Have a good day! Take care
So since you clearly want to play a paladin and not feel useless, how do you do so, while keeping the spirit of vanilla.
I won’t be. Playing mage instead. I don’t have anywhere near the time to play that I used to, so I don’t want to mess with broken class balance and no dual-spec.
Classic Paladins are not useless they are actually the best single target healer in the game, a well played Holy will keep a raid alive. They donot OOM, if done correctly.
If you want to tank or Ret, expect only to do that in 5 mans or if your lucky to get into a casual guild who raids casually and is okay with Ret as a dps and Prot as a trash mob tank.
But Holy is the raiding spec and thats fine with me. I sell enough on the AH in classic that I raid holy and quest RET… so it was never an issue with me.
This is me. That being said I still expect a drop off, because a lot of people have no idea what they’re getting themselves into.
Agreed. No updates to classic, full stop. The texture update is as far as it goes.
the entire point of the discussion is you have people like ghyslain who magically want to have the normally non optimal specs be optimal.
but they also don’t know how to make that happen without heavy homogenization or by invalidating other classes.
for example - if hybrids were doing comparable damage to everyone else - other than a few niche areas, why would i bring a hunter to the raid? a druid does comparable damage and brings me other utility that would give them the edge.
i mean i could see the doing separate servers where they potentially have updates. but classic servers would have to remain classic.
