Go back and watch the announcement at Blizzcon about the return to WoW’s roots with Vanilla classic servers. Listen to the language used about the reactions of the crowd to the news that we would be getting our beloved game back.
Recall the forums around the same time. Cataclysm was a byword for the portal to hell that was the Retail game today. I am quite certain that almost anyone who really missed the old game would have foamed at the mouth at the very notion that one day we would be moving into “Cataclysm Classic” a WoW oxymoron if ever I heard one.
The naysayers on the forums said that it was all about “nostalgia” rather than about preferring the game, and I’m sad to say that it seems for enough of us to make it profitable for Blizzard, they are right.
It really didn’t take long for people to start racing to max level, rushing endgame content, boosting alts because “levelling is boring” and “the game starts at max level” - basically everything that gave us the endgame lobby experience that Retail became.
And now what do we get - a Blizzcon announcement of Cataclysm classic where “An improved levelling experience” is touted as one of the selling points, along with “transmog” and “flying in Azeroth”, all the stuff that so many of us wanted away from. Now we get a return to the lightning-fast, linear levelling experience, phasing, race to the end and queue queue queue we saw the first time… er… yay?
Another selling point is “faster content rollouts” so we can race race race through raids. Sigh. Because levelling’s boring, right? Who would want to do that?
All this was, of course, announced by a suspiciously young “Classic Team” - only the second guy seemed to have any enthusiasm or actual knowledge about the game, the rest seem to have been parachuted into their roles because of the optics after bad press in recent years.
Classic should never have advanced beyond WOTLK. If there’s not enough to sustain servers, this makes me sad.

ah yes, the leveling is part of the journey bs. meanwhile in reality, everyone rushed to 60 asap, and used botted gold to boost alts. Almost no one was actually leveling in classic…

Vanilla classic is still there, enjoy

Cata is for retail players who find retail too hard, but want a game that feels like retail.
All those homogenized systems, holy power, removal of resource management, hunters getting focus…

cata is not like retail… it’s almost identical to wotlk ffs…

I’ve tried man, but these people aren’t going to pull their heads out of their rears any time soon. It’s easier to just point and laugh at them

Had I known then what they would do to wrath and THEN FORCE everyone into cata…I won’t have bothered coming back at all…lol

I didn’t feel this way the first time around, and I don’t feel that way now.

tbc, wrath, mop people mainly played vanilla to get to their preferred xpac. Vanilla is better than retail, but not good enough to start at level one, for those folks mentioned above. That sorry money grab to “clone” characters put the nail in that coffin. They should have only charged $15 for the whole account to be “cloned”. But it’s not about the long-term finances anymore.

Classic should have never advanced beyond vanilla. And as Servechilled pointed out, era servers still exist. The original classic audience still has what they wanted. A server set forever on the final patch of vanilla.

wait I thought leveling was part of the journey

No we didn’t KNOW, wrath was the popular xpac and there was no reason to think blizzard would defiantly fumble the ball, again. Not out of realm to believe they would keep the most xpac era severs.
But, they are again playing the RDF game…“no plans at this time”. They are going to see how many people unsub, plain and simple. Don’t make disingenuous arguments, as we all have seen blizzard’s recent track record.

here is the thing blizz will keep making the classic game go on through the xpac’s, they never once stated they will stop at a certain point, the players assumed it would stop. Until this service does not make them enough money to make it a point of pushing onwards, they will keep going no matter what people want.

Please keep making up garbage, so we know who not to listen to.
Jesus Christ just go play on era.
Like you got what you wanted, it still exists, you don’t have to play cata. If you want to have this tribal us and them mentality then leave to your era and enjoy it.
You don’t have to move on.

they also have hardcore and sod… like what more do they even want?
They have their toy, but they want to take away all the other toys, so that we’re all forced to watch them or join them?
We don’t want to play with your broken toy…

Broken toy? This toy was a best seller people have had nostalgia for for the better part of the past decade. Your toy is coming in and replacing the best seller.
Cata fans are the ones victory lapping over a “toy” getting taken away
