Why are Ret players disliked by some the community?

I see a lot of disdain torwards Ret players (moreso than other classes, besides maybe Hunters) and I was wondering why that is? I primarily play Warrior but I do enjoy playing my Ret alt too and I’ve been curious to why this stigma exists/how it developed?

I think it’s largely due to historical interactions (pre-10.0.7) and stereotypical assumptions.

Ret Paladins have been pretty squishy and weak in the past, despite having a class fantasy which suggests the exact opposite. It’s lead to some pretty degenerate behaviors for some Ret Paladin players.

Yeah, the hate we got after the re-work was unbelievable.

It’s our class color. If we got blue instead of shamans it would be totally different.

the ugly truth is that alot of players are painful to interact with, and theres a uptick of these types of players who play paladin as a whole. historically ret players werent hte brightest of the bunch, even now with ret being fotmer for a half patch alot of the pool was filled with the most clueless type of meta slave. so much so that if you press bop, freedom, sac, wog once or twice heck anything remotely in your utility you’ll probably get a “thank you your the best ret ive ever seen” after the key is done.

Vanilla wow pvp bubble hearth started it all. Until your buddy’s been ganked and you got the old bubble hearth done to you while you were acting out your revenge, you don’t know hatred.

i really like that bubble decreases the cast time of hearth now, to honor that

I think it’s because ret paladin was always associated with noob players. In classic and TBC if you were ret in groups, it was a noob move, because it was a leveling spec and you were supposed to heal. To add insult to the injury, in Wrath they were buffed to the skies and it became a FotM class, now the noobs got ability to stomp others with just three buttons of rotation (at the time).

Then recently in 10.0.7 they were buffed again and became FotM again overnight, and the old stereotype was refreshed sadly.

Have you seen how a ret main acts?

Anyone would take a ret pally over a fury war

Just curious—how do we act?

Just like the people that hate on hunters it is just people being toxic because their class has less utility and is harder to play.

Hunters are a great class because of their utility they can escape death using feign death, have a built in tank in their pet and can cast while moving.
So people stuck standing there channeling who can only do dmg and are screwed when stuff starts to go bad get mad and cry and scream like children. Making fun of the hunter because it is “easy” like it is a bad thing for a class to have lots of utility and not have a complex dmg rotation… I just call that a good class myself haha.

Same things for the Paladin, you can heal yourself, have defense bubbles, do decent dmg etc… So people get weird about it and make fun of you for enjoying having utility that is simple and easy to use.

What’s worse is I read this and was like “Wait… I’ve seen people say this stuff before” and ended up realizing it was 2 years ago much later than I’d like to admit.

Doesn’t matter, ret players can’t read (this) anyway

It doesn’t matter, I can guarantee you that all healers prefer ret to warrior.
