Why are people so obsessed with everything in this game being "dark"?

My absolute favorite thing from the original Warcraft games was clicking a unit to here all the silly stuff they said. Warcraft to me was always a dark humor type of game…more on the humor than the dark. It was a pissed of peon, not Snyderverse Batman.

We need dark stories with great gallows humor not dry dark blegh.

Because they’re stuck at 15 in their hearts.

Which is what happens when stories keep escalating into the grandiose…and making the unknown into the commonplace.

The first Nightmare on Elm Street was very good. Loved it.
By the time 3 …4. and 5 came out, they had made Freddy into a comedy club act. No more terror, no fear…just waiting for the next one liner / punchline lol.

This game went off the rails with the escalation years ago…many years ago.
When youve fought demi gods there is no more mystique to the world anymore.

If they started toning it down now, maybe in 4 or 5 expansions the world could feel mysterious again. Maybe.

Sorry but not a fair comparison.

Try toy story 3 vs dark knight rises. Both amazing movies. You can’t compare Trolls to Dark Knight. Keep it fair…FIGHT!

If my favorite movie is The Exorcist and not 27 Dresses, that doesn’t make me 15 at heart.

Middle of the road would be Forest Gump. He’s always happy just to be himself, but along the way, his best friend dies, his new best friend loses his legs, and the love of his life gives him a son… before she dies from an 80s disease. You laugh, you cry. Your sould gets pulled in every direction. It has it all.

I’m at war with Xal, I am invading and ‘making friends,’ as I go after Xal’ while I murder on the way…

nothing changed

The Exorcist goes deeper than just edgy. It has heart. People don’t want The Exorcist, people want The Pope’s Exorcist with the one liners, edgyness for the sake of it and just action.

Is that the one with Russel Crowe?

lol.
Personally I like DF and TWW as far as that middle of the road between light and dark goes.
Yeah, there are some cheezy, overly juvenile quests, but I just ignore them except to get them done.
I will admit those little anime characters that sometimes flew around our head in DF…yeah…ok…I’ll agree…seriously over the top with the kiddie crap on that one, lol

but by and large Ive really enjoyed the last two expansions.
just so burned out from playing, though

Yes, and a guilty pleasure.

This is pretty valid and if you ask me is where WoW should live. Dark notes, heavy stories, tons of character and humor. That is the best place for these stories to be entertaining and fun. Then again if they went full Doom Patrol I would be happy as well. Just totally dark and messed up but hilarious and heart felt as well.

Mix it up!

Ok, then Princess Mononoke, the number one anime film of all time, against Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood the number one Anime of a dark nature. Apples to apples comparison.

Since this “mentally immature equals liking edgy content” argument keeps going, isn’t it really the players who like the cartoony stuff who are stuck at the age of five years old?

I mean if you like the Blue’s Clues aesthetic, just see how odd it sounds calling fans of “edgier” content mentally stunted.

Uh, which one is the happy fun one there? haha. Love me some mononoke and Fullmetal but those are both crazy dark. I guess Alchemist has more light hearted notes but uhm…yeah I can’t see that as a comparison between light hearted and dark.

Don’t know, the darkness is still there, people just ignore it. You see corpses pinned to the walls in hallowfall all over. You see sea creatures straight out of Dagon, eating and torching people. Cultists killing people and sacrificing them.

We also have light heartened stuff as well, which was always the warcraft MO. I guess people just ignored that a lot of the time and just focused on the corpses back in Wrath.

Everyone remembers the cold and dark areas, everyone forgets about the poop quests in Grizzly Hills and fart jokes.

This game had 12m subs during wrath. In that story, the main evil bad guy was there before you made two levels, taunting you. You wouldn’t see him in a raid for a long time, but he was everywhere along the way. And it was great, no rainbows or unicorns, just building animosity towards the Lich King until ICC was finally released. It was epic, nothing has touched it since.

I mean, if we are just using WoW expansions, Wrath was one of the truly darkest lores and expansions. SL came close.

If I had to guess, it’s probably just the gradual shift in tone that the game’s had over time that’s likewise gradually turned players off at least from a story perspective.

A story being ‘dark’ is fine.

A story being ‘light-hearted’ is fine.

A story starting out as one and morphing into the other is probably going to be polarizing in most cases, and that’s what WoW’s done over its long life.

Ha! I took an expansion break for DF. Didn’t appeal to me. Midnight brought me back early lol. Grinding that gold just in case it’s needed for housing.
