Why are people so obsessed with everything in this game being "dark"?

Why does the story have to be edgy and miserable in order to be considered “good writing” or whatever?

It’s depressing.

What’s wrong with something more light-hearted, sometimes funny, and overall hopeful?

There’s nothing wrong with dark fantasy moments, nor is there anything wrong with moments of levity to break up those darker moments.

People have different tastes and things they get invested in when it comes to story telling. And that is perfectly fine.

the whole of the warcaft franchise is built on war, invasions, and murder.

this ain’t MLP we don’t hold hands and sing songs around a campfire…

We raid villages and plunder.

The game was at its most popular in Wrath. Which was arguably its bleakest setting. The game has always had that late 90’s early 2000’s edge sprinkled with levity and pop culture references.

The War Within is fine. DF gave me adult diabetes.

Nothing if you want to play that type of game…

I prefer a darker game myself and wow has been drifting from the darkness for a while now.

It’s a valid ask and purely preferential.

sure.

but why is literally anything that isn’t a “dark fantasy moment” decried as “bad writing” around here?

People gunna try to gaslight like wow wasn’t always the cartooniest game the entire time

But super edgy and dark with murder explosions and burning down towns totally

Probably because wows roots were much darker than today’s fantasy.

It’s a much more lighthearted game these days.

And yeah…there is bad writing

It isn’t. You’re being very hyperbolic. People have different tastes in things. It is as simple as that. No story, movie, video game etc, is universally loved.

In terms of story telling though and my personal preferences, especially when concerning fantasy, is that it needs a good mixture of serious moments broken up with moments of levity. Too much silliness, or too much seriousness, is a bad thing.

Some people have a sense that something being dark makes it more mature. It comes from a youthful insecurity about one’s own maturity. That if they’re caught lacking and enjoying subjects that are cute or fun it takes away from a serious persona they have of themselves in their mind’s eye. It feels childish, and adults wish to see themselves apart from being childish because being childish is precisely the opposite of being an adult. When you get older, you tend to grow out of this sort of thing and appreciate things for what they are.

Part of it might also stem from Warhammer’s recent surge of popularity with Space Marine 2, and a new flock of people who are just getting into its grimdark lore leading to a sort of convert’s zeal and obsession with the gore-soaked and dystopian. Not a one of them would be able to tell you who Obiwan Sherlock Cluseau is, however.

It’s also built on units saying goofy things when you click on them too many times and slapstick goblin explosions.

And as a result, we spend too much time trying to be serious. As if that proved that we were more enlightened! Better than everyone else!
But we can’t be free until we learn to laugh at ourselves. Once you look in the mirror and see just how foolish we can be, laughter is inevitable. And from laughter, comes wisdom.

Because it’s boring when there’s no danger or stakes present.

Nothing wrong with games like Animal Crossing, but notice that combat isn’t a part of that game.

WoW is about combat, so yeah I can’t blame folks for missing the darker elements.

Depressing? Sure, but what war isn’t lol- it’s supposed to be.

Overwatch (before they ruined it) did a pretty good job of this, imho. The world was more or less destroyed or in bad shape, overall the vibes were kinda dark, but the Overwatch team itself was the light in the darkness.

WoW was like that, too.

But lately (as of around DF) it seems peace has won out, which is just… divisive in a game with ‘war’ in the name of it.

It’s like complaining Call of Duty is too violent, so everyone puts the guns down to do… something else lol.

War is why people come to WoW.

That’s what the game exists for, for the majority that play it.

It’s all preference. The ones you hear on the forums are the most vocal among the playerbase. It’s hardly a majority opinion, its just the opinions of those who care enough to be on a wow forum.

The writing was never that great, dark or not. It has it’s better moments. Some of those might be during darker feeling times. Some were not. I found the Lich King taunting everyone in dungeons during Wrath to be annoying.

Speak for yourself. I come to WoW for ogres shouting “me smash puny %race!” and goblins exploding on themselves and snooty elves being snooty.

I’d argue that’s part of the war lol.

Yeah it’s silly too, that’s also part of WoW’s DNA.

It’s a balance of edgy and goofy.

Lots of races, like ogres and goblins, and orcs, like to fight ‘just because’.
