valid! i remember reading a suggestion in some commentary on his work that lovecraft himself was probably influenced in some ways by the obscure deities from antiquity, and you can see why they’d inform his work; iirc even tolkien sourced some of his phonemes for black speech from akkadian, so it appears fantasy writers of all stripes have been pulling from that sliver of an intersection between history and geography for a long while.

Although I like Lovecraft’s universe, I did some research into the origin of the name.

According to the book Stay Awhile and Listen: How Two Blizzards Unleashed Diablo and Forged a Video-Game Empire , the name “Azeroth” was inspired by the 1979 novel Fires of Azeroth by author C.J. Cherryh. [S]

yeah just not literate enough in '70s and '80s paperback fantasies to have snagged this reference. honestly, i did think of, like, raven’s homeworld ‘azarath’ from the dcu. watching the cartoon network teen titans show when i was younger, i could’ve sworn she was saying ‘azeroth’ lol

Idk why some people think all values of “Don’t be a jerk” were invented out of whole cloth by the West, when the West itself is evil, as we’ve seen now and throughout history.

In a fantasy game, yes bioessentilism does exist and should frankly. Can there be exceptions to this from time to time? Sure, thats good storytelling. But the frequency it happens in wow among other changes in storytelling supports my initial statement.

Geez imagine LOTR and when they see orcs coming, Gimli mentions maybe not all orcs are bad maybe its wrong to kill them. It just doesnt fit. Just stop trying so hard to defend a direction the devs have chosen to take us

Many fantasy series are improving their writing to get rid of such tropes, not just WoW.

boy it must be comforting as a ‘fantasy enjoyer’ when you don’t have to worry about things like morals and instead can just rely on visual cues to tell us the good guys from the bad. no need to engage your brain, cuz so long as the writers don’t bother to include any sort of nuance, you don’t have to engage with it! super convenient

Imagine, instead, the nuance that might have been added if Tolkien had written it that way. The tug-of-war it might have introduced into the characters if they were not merely fighting a force of pure evil in LotR.

The so-called evil that is just another person fighting for their life is by far a more compelling story than they’re flatly evil and only evil and we have to kill them.

I feel like you’re just one moment away from going on a Rings of Power tirade, especially considering Tolkien regretted having written the orcs as objectively evil and would struggle greatly with how much of a contradiction the idea of an intelligent, sentient species that is morally evil was with his Catholic faith.
