FAPs will let melee break a mage. They suck against all casters and hunters. Great at farming but the min-maxer will dump on a mage.
Truly surprised a hunter is saying this about mages. You shouldn’t let a mage trap you in your deadzone. If you do, it’s on your positioning. Mages don’t have stealth so you should position accordingly when you see one.

Well, they are less beefy than Warlocks, and lack a pet, which in the open world can make a big difference in the field. Sure, a mage who sets up correctly can AoE like mad, while using Frost Nova and the chill in Blizzard to annihilate groups. However, if things go sideways, or someone manages to hit them with a ranged stun long enough for someone to get into melee, they’re in serious trouble. Warlocks, at least, have more survivability in solo play.
Now, in dungeons/raids, being able to bring three very different ranged damage types and utility spells for days is a very nice thing.
if you are a lock, sp or a hunter and die to a mage sorry but it’s a massive git gud situation.

After restarting on a 3rd Classic character on PvE server, I asked myself: What is one class I can level for PvP, PvE and gold-making? No-brainer.

I wasn’t going to roll a mage in classic since I mained one from vanilla to wrath… but man, after lasher farming and seeing how little I make in comparison to my mage days… yeah, it’s time to roll one.

mages have ice armor, a magic shield, a blink and ice block, and you’re gonna tell me they have a hard time getting out of trouble? sure they’re no druid, but I’ve never seen a mage have a hard time escaping someone if they really didn’t want to fight. They can even iceblock while being CC’d by anything that isn’t a silence. Mages are also the best caster DPS class period for PvE and PvP until warlocks start scaling harder with better gear and can more reliably pump out crits. oh yeah and they get POM for instant poly if they talent for it, so any melee is forced to bring FAPs to even have a chance.
it’s not even about losing to one in a 1v1, it’s just acknowledging that it’s a very hard sell to argue any other caster dps being as overall good as mages are right now. Warlocks need another phase or 2 to start hitting their stride on the damage end

They’re broken as farmers.
If you want an easy investment at endgame just farm on them for a few hours and your laughing.

They need to buff iceblock to last about 10-15 minutes.
because AoE with unlimited targets is ridiculously broken
