Why 3 final expansions instead of just 1?

When Blizzard first announced this they said it was “too epic for a single expansion” but that’s not a lot of details and since then there has been info on the content but not really sure I understand. I’m debating if I want to really pay for 3 expansions when we’ve had single expansions that lasted 3 years. Why not just have one final expansion packed with content? It seemed like just a way to get three times the money out of wrapping up the game but that also feels a bit pessimistic.

What are y’all’s thoughts? For those in Alpha or those keeping up with the content, does it really seem like we need to split 3 years over 3 expansions rather than 1 final expansion packed with content? What could be so epic it needs to be spread out between games we have to purchase rather than just adding it to the War Within, which we would of already paid for?

I dont understand what you mean.

There is no “final expansion” planned.

Expansions werent 3 years. They are typically about 2.

The next 3 expansions arent going to be 1 year each. Closer to 2, still.

there is no “final”

they are making an arc trilogy and then after the last titan they are doing a clean slate probably. something happens at the end of the last titan which turns the world of azeroth on its head. and we get 20 more years of wow lol

they did this before but with more expansions starting in TBC and ending with legion.

Oh okay, I thought it was “ending” and they were going to have WoW 2 or something.

wow 2 is too big a risk these days

I don’t think WoW2 is ever going to happen. There’s plenty of people, like me, who would stop playing WoW if Wow2 happened and all of our characters, achieves, mounts, mogs and such didn’t transfer over. It’s why I can’t get into classic. I want my stuff I’ve earned.

They’ll just introduce different things for the expacs after these three. I do think something going to happen at the end and we’ll have basically a new world to work with, but I don’t think they’ll do a WoW2.

Here he mentioned it’s going to play out over multiple (three) expansions over the next few years. https://youtu.be/F1pkwARaVAY?si=GlpdD04E4aFm5W5l&t=1101

So I assumed each of the three expansions would be about a year long. Good to know though that’s it not just going to end. Thanks for the info!

The only thing they said about time frame, is they want it wrapped up by 2030.

It’s marketing hype. You are overthinking it.

Do you also demand answers from P&G about which 9 specific dentists recommend their toothpaste?

What makes you think these are the final expansions. Blizz has said they are looking towards the next possible 20 years .

Will it last that long who knows but I doubt it will be over in the 4.5-6 years that TWW-Last Titan take

I wish this World Soul Saga was the end, OP.

But it isn’t.

Not a single expansion lasted more than twenty-seven months, or two years and three months; that’s hardly three years.

Because these aren’t the “final expansions” for World of Warcraft.

The game is not being “wrapped up”.

It’s 3 expansions.

I’ll still play them.

I got no opinion. It’s probably a good thing knowing the story is actually being thought of

They arent 3 final expansions. They are a 3-expansion saga. Simply devs sat down with Metzen and said “hey, our story is garbage, can you help us fix it?” and he probably said “FFXIV released their story throughout 5 expansions as a saga, not trying to tell a story in one expansion” so they copied that idea and put it over 3 expansions or 6-9 years.

Yes. Cough 'em up P&G. I want names and addresses.

At this point in the lifespan of the game it was important to reassure players, employees, and investors that there was years of content planned going forward.

It ends whenever you wish. Nobody’s forcing you to keep playing. :woman_shrugging:

I just love the forums that keeps on thinking that somehow Worldsoul saga is the final when they haven’t said anything like that.

I don’t care. It just means there’s at least 3 xpacs before they take down the servers and I have to find a new game. I’ve played StarCraft: BroodWars, Diablo II, World of WarCraft exclusively since 2000 when I got my first home computer and internet in my house for the first time. Never been one to play a bunch of different games, and I still play these 3 games to this day. Haven’t liked the new SC’s or Diablos, and I’m sure if they had a WoW 2 it’d suck just as bad as SC2/D3/D4 etc… Oh I also play HoTS and have been since I was in the early Beta version, although they ruined that once top tier amazing game. The Beta was the best version and they screwed it all up with monetization. Rather they just made us pay for it or even get a Blizzard pass to keep it good, oh well.

So long as WoW is profitable for Blizzard, there will be expansions.

It is very unlikely they will ever try to make WoW 2, at least not while the current game is making money. Anyone watching the genre over the past 20 years can see how sequels to mmos work out. (The original eq/eq2 devs regret trying to split the playerbase with eq2 and given how poorly EQ2 did, sure EQ2 is still alive, but it has never reached the same popularity of EQ)

I can remember people here stating with supreme confidence that Wrath was the last expansion.

My favourites though where the ones who said it would end at level 100, because apparently that’s how businesses work.
