Which Healer?

Returning player wondering which healer to choose.

What I want:

  1. Best for beginner healer.
  2. Horde, PvE focused.
  3. Not horrible for solo leveling.

Class/race/spec recommendations greatly appreciated. As well as any tips for dps wanting to try healing.

Thanks.

Paladins are boring as hell super early but by 40 can level really well. Druids are always great but require more work to do well in PvE healing and there are already a ton of them. Shaman can level really easy and are super desirable by everyone. Priests are fantastic healers but kind of suck to level until 40 and even then it’s a lot of wands or drink every 2 seconds.

My suggestion would be either a shaman or a paladin. People will want you, healing is easy and leveling isn’t bad.

edit since you said horde go orc shaman or belf paladin.

Priest. You could spec shadow as you level, and that’s what I did until about level 50 back in Vanilla Classic. You can heal and DPS up to a certain point.

After that, I just specced Holy. I leveled the entirety of BC in holy spec, and while you’re not going to be as fast at killing things as other classes, you’ll never die. I don’t think I died more than twice to non-PvP activity the entire time I was leveling to 70. That’s not something other classes can say, and it evens out the grinding times.

Use a mixture of dungeons and quests to level, and you’ll have a smooth ride. Priest heals are pretty straightforward, and the biggest challenge with it is mana management and a full understanding of the entire kit…which you master much better if you’ve spent the entire time using it to level.

Resto Shaman without a doubt. You might have a hard time in Arena but you excel at just about everything else.

Healing dungeons ain’t bad as an ele shaman. If I ever get him to 70 he’ll be deep resto for pvp.

Don’t level the healing spec, unless you hate yourself.

IMO, elemental shaman might be the easiest. You can use pretty much the same gear for questing and dungeons. Pick herbalism/alchemy so you can make your own potions and flasks.

I played enhance up to 40 and went ele, back in classic. I still think that’s the better way to do it now. But if OP doesn’t mind drinking a lot then ele will work fine.

Mana is a HUGE problem for ele. Water shield at 62 was such a blessing.

Most mana-using seem classes struggle with mana management early on. I think the key is not to be in a hurry.

Ele was the best back then but is not anymore to level because of dual wield and the ending enhance talent with mana regen and damage reduction. Now enhance is by far the better leveling/grinding spec.

I agree. However, you will really only need one set of gear for leveling if you go elemental. Not many classes level slower than Classic ret… So at least elemental has that going for it

I’d have to agree with you for just straight level grinding, but if you want to heal while leveling then rolling ele and using the same gear is going to be the way to go.

Casters will also love you for wrath of fury if you level ele and heal dungeons.

True but honestly you can do the same exact thing picking up some random eagle gear at low levels. And at higher levels you either can’t heal dungeons or you drink after every pull. Enhance is just faster and easier, plus you can still get groups because you bring totems and a resurrect button.

See the post right above this one. You lose out on a lot of solo leveling going elemental now. The speed is just too much faster as enhance. And you still bring a ton of dungeon grinding if you can find groups for the lower level stuff.

Understood, I’m healing just fine as ele at 62. Everything I’ve read agrees with you at higher level though. If I ever make it I’ll probably switch deep resto at late 67-68.

Not sure about best but shaman is the most fun.

The utility shamans bring is always wanted too. You won’t top charts, but you’ll ensure everyone else is doing the best they can. You have to like being a supporter to enjoy shaman.

I figured specifying fun was going too far. Truthfully, I had completely forgotten about shaman, still have my mind in Classic Vanilla, I guess.

Thank you, everyone, I’m going to go read up on shaman.

I recommend priest, that was my first healing character and I learned how to heal very quickly and found it quite easy. It’s always a solid healer. And you can always go shadow too which is pretty fun. Go undead or blood elf priest with tailoring and enchanting
