A lot of hunters don’t even know how to do basic trapping.
Huntards don’t want salvation because they want more dps.
Hunters don’t want salvation because it messes up our ability to get aggro when we need to get it to CC or even kite mobs off the the tank of he is going to die otherwise, then FD and let it return to tank.
There are times I have intentionally pulled aggro off a tank on a mob to concussion shot it, let it run toward me for 4 seconds, and then FD and it goes back to the tank, just to keep the damage off the tank for a little bit.
Also I use distracting shot on my trapped target on CD to have highest threat so if it gets out it goes for me and not the healer AND it let’s tank use taunt and have a good threat lead on the other dps and then I FD and he is stop threat by a mile. If taunt fails I will slow it and kite until tank is second threat to be above the healer then FD.
And yes FD resists now and then, but me being killed is better for the group most of the time than a dead tank/healer.
I’ve been a hunter since actual vanilla. I was a trash huntard back then, but I have over 15 years of experience with the class now as it’s been my main until legion (when I quit retail because they took away the actual hunter class with them remaking all the classes) and started back up in classic.
I don’t blame you for not trusting hunters to know how to control their aggro, most don’t. But on occasion you might get a hunter that knows how to play aggro tag with his pet, that knows how to hover at that line between pulling threat and not doing so so he can pull a mob of you for a few seconds to give give healer time to heal you, huntards are everywhere so I wish you luck in finding the hunters in the sea of huntards.
DPS pulling mobs off you 2s into the pull before you’ve had a chance to aggro? The proper response is to quietly whisper the healer to not heal that person, then let them tank what they’ve pulled. They’ll learn or they’ll die too many times and eventually quit the group.
I tank for pugs because it gets me a group instantly rather than having to wait for a dps spot. Which isnt THAT much longer but eh. Plus tanking anything heroic and below isnt difficult as any spec honestly
a pet peeve of mine is certain hunters insist on trying to trap or kite mobs when I haven’t asked for it. As a tank all I see is a mob getting loose and then I’m usually blowing a feral charge and taunt or bash
a good hunter who can trap and CC effectively is great. A hunter who just wants to trap because he can is a hindrance. If they made an announce macro or something I’d be cool with it
Running pugs CAN make you better but you don’t NEED to run with crappy pugs to be good, if you’re a good tank, you should be able to form a good group, become the lead, form the group yourself and make your own blacklist of terrible players to avoid and add the great ones to your friends list, boom.
I’ll let the tank set up the first pull, do what he asks. If we wipe because he’s just taking to much damage, I will insist on a trap target. If he still refuses and dies again I will mark the target I plan to trap, tell him I’m trapping it and go from there. If he intentionally breaks it, I know the tank is bad at that point and won’t listen to reason. I will usually leave the group if they refuse to listen to advise and learn how to tank.
Thankfully I haven’t had a pug tank outside of maybe 3 instances since classic launch and only 1 of then was so bad I left group.
Mootilate, You’re wrong. There is not a tank shortage because of what you described. There is a tank shortage for this reason.
A group consists of 5 players, of which you always need one tank or you can’t kill anything.
Tank grinds a bunch of dungeons week one after hitting level 70. They acquire all the gear they need. They stop tanking stuff.
The real reason there is tank shortage is this simple fact: Lack of incentive.
I could log on right now. Get on my tank, find random pugs and lead them through almost any heroic in the game. But why would I? I have nothing to gain from it.
What you describe, Mootilate, is only a small piece of the tank shortage. The biggest issue is lack of incentive. Players don’t play out of the kindness of their hearts. They only want to play when they stand to gain something.
Most bad tanks always blame the other people in the group. When the problem is correctable before it even happens. It’s called communicating. Try it some time.
Oh yeah I guess you’re right, and the other dozens of tanks in this thread that have commented stating that my statements are true, and that they don’t tank pugs anymore, for many/all of the reasons I listed is not correct.
ROFLMAO must be nice. Just left a group after telling the Ele Shammy 3 times in a row, STOP spamming your chain lightning as soon as I go to pull, my CD is 15 sec. Everyone else in the group understood this w/out me even having to say anything, this moron wasn’t having it, so on the 4th pull soon as he did it I dropped group and tele’d out. Im honestly at the point of just saying eff running dungeons if its not w/guild.
Well you’re not claiming he dissed you and asked “do you even know how to tank.” And you had 2 dps and a healer that were doing fine but instead of kicking the shaman and getting another dps you left everyone for a probable wipe. If I was the healer I’d put you on my ignore list and probably the shaman too.
That’s because the incentive is insufficient to outweigh the frustration/s if tanking for pugs.
In fact there’s no incentive at all.
I agree with the poster in that pug tank shortages exist because there’s nothing in it for a tank who no longer needs that instance.
Who on earth wants to do something with no upside and only possible downside?
I see pugs LF tank for this or that instance, and I feel for them if I’ve seen them calling out for 20mins while I float in shattrah around doing nothing.
I feel like I wanna help them before remembering there’s nothing in it for me except gratitude.
Gratitude doesn’t pay the bills. And actually it frequently isn’t even forthcoming.
For some reason the ele shamans I’ve had in my group do the same thing, they start winding up that CL as you’re running at the mob like bro if that crits and doubles up you’re toast.
I’ve ran 106 bots now for my claw and daily heroics I’ve had zero problems if your group is causing that leave.
The casual people are geared to the nines at this point. I’m curious what these hyper skips are though. Do you mean the bridge jump that everyone knows about?
