I think the original intent was to remove any connotation that gender might be tied to physical anatomy (which technically is accurate since gender identity/assigned anatomy at birth are not always the same) but the method comes off a little strange.

Eh, lots of new games are doing it. The only reason anyone even noticed is because it had to be changed, and of course the culture warriors blew it up.

Body shape is controlled by your biological sex not gender so changing the names still doesn’t make any sense yo can’t even technically choose your gender in WoW.
