Anduin is suposed to be a good character but they menage to make him significantly worse and try to justify his downgrade as “development”
Of all the characters in wow, Arthas has arguably the best story arc (except for that 
ending they gave to it in shadowlands).

There was an interview with the CEO (I think) of Ubisoft and he said that currently most employees working on Assassin’s Creed are juniors working on their first game.
I wonder if maybe that’s the case too with the current staff working on Warcraft lore and resulting in all these new bland and safe characters.
Illidan story is at least top 3, and im not even a fan of him.

Not to mention all the twists and turns being an antihero. Gul’dan, Lichking, Dreadlords, Maghteridon…Maiev, Naaru, Kil’jaeden… the whole night elves magic thing, sunwell, my dear god, he did everything he could

Modern writing has no plans for epic characters. Just one boring character, copy and pasted into different aesthetics to simulate diversity.
They had to almost entirely retcon TBC because they shoved him into the blatant villain role with basically no story justification, and then decided years later that they actually wanted to use him as a character after all.

Illidan’s story is just the “rival” from any generic shonen anime with the serial numbers filed off and some wings.
Killed demons in the War of Ancients and consumed their power; ostracized by his fellow night elves for it.
Killed demons in the Third War and consumed their power; ostracized by his fellow night elves for it.
Killed demons in the Tomb of Sargeras and consumed their power; ostracized by his fellow night elves, with a tiny reprieve because Furion needed him for like five minutes.
Killed demons in Outland and consumed their power; ostracized by everybody.
Killed demons during Legion and consumed their power; ostracized by X’era, for which he zapped her with eyebeams; finally locked in prison so we didn’t have to go through this whole thing again.
Guy’s only got “no contradictions” because he only has one story beat.
The one olds suck too, people are just nostalgic for them and overlook it.
With Metzen returning, I suspect they may be able to turn Faerin into that. Right now, she’s kinda an amorphic entity that was clearly created to tick a PoC, woman and disabled box all in one (a hat-trick)… yet I actually think the writers defied their own impulses (or listened to Metzen in the 11th hour) and managed to avoid making her insufferable. She’s actually a cool character I would like to see more involved.
I’m hoping they do more with her and give her a bit of story investment. Maybe whenever we find out more about the actual Empire and its Emperor.
