When does debuff apply

Fine… let me ask it this way…
When is it ok to drop (or get kicked) from a Dungeon group without incurring the 30 minute “deserter” debuff? Thanks.

If you drop or get kicked before you kill the final boss, you get the debuff.
This is the case for both LFG dungeons AND raid finder.

As you know CS does not help with game hints and is not the place to discuss game features, debate game features, or suggest changes to game features.

Just so I’m clear, a group can kick a player right before the final boss and that player not only misses out on that boss (and loot) but also gets a 30 minute punishment solely because three other people voted to do that to him?

No, but to be fair, it can be helpful to understand the full functionality of a feature for those who might have questions on what they are experiencing.

I’d rather this then taking over another thread.

As long as it doesn’t go into suggestions/feedback on how one believes it should work.

Ok then

Yep, if you are kicked for any reason you get Deserter Debuff.

I feel this can help a bit, albeit it’s about FF14, but it does touch on WoW’s debuff related to this.

That would certainly sum it up.

Thanks. I know the question carried an opinionated tone, but I wanted to be clear. As a player who primarily plays a tank class, I’ve been under the impression that dropping group (or being kicked) only carries the debuff if you hadn’t yet reached the first boss. Now I know there is no safe time to drop or be kicked. Thanks for the info.

Thanks.

As of a few days ago, basically never, outside of the final boss of the instance being dead.

…though there can be some extenuating circumstances – I joined a random TW dungeon group just before a server outage yesterday and had just engaged the first boss when suddenly myself and another player in the group were booted offline by said server outage. When I came back, I was not in the group, zoned in to find a 3/4 bosses killed instance, and did not have deserter or the 15 minute cooldown timer for queueing up for another dungeon, even though 15 minutes hadn’t passed yet.

That’s interesting. Perhaps someone knows exactly how the mechanic works and what those extenuating circumstances are.

Also, does time spent in the dungeon count against the 30 minute penalty? For example, if a group spends 25 minutes wiping over and over against the first boss, and a player decides to drop (which would be pretty reasonable under these circumstances), does he get the full 30 minute penalty?

No.

Why would you think that would be a thing? If you spend 25 minutes in a dungeon and then drop, what’s the penalty at that point?

My thought is that after spending 25 minutes banging your head against a wall, wiping 10 or more times against the first boss, it would certainly be reasonable to expect that the party wasn’t going to succeed and that it’s sensible to drop the group.

5 minutes. And if you’re more than 30 minutes into a dungeon, you wouldn’t get the debuff at all. At that point, you’d have made the substantive effort in the dungeon (which I gather from the prior explanations is the primary reason behind the debuff).

And please understand, I’m not saying this is how I think it should work. I’m just answering Veana’s question as to how I thought it might currently work (and why), so please…

I see the current system as completely fine for dungeons. Issues happened when the “leaving after the first boss also incurs deserter debuff” was applied to LFR though. The problem is with backfilling and having to do part of the raid again. I already submitted a suggestion. Give backfilled people who have to queue again to do the earlier bosses a bonus bag of some sort if they stay for the rest of the raid. Just a little incentive that would help a lot with the backfilling situation.

That makes sense. If you queue in to the 2nd boss and complete the LFR Raid and then requeue so you can get the first boss, there’s no incentive to keep going, since you’ve already looted the rest of the bosses.
