Just got my lock to 60 and starting to gear up. I’ve done a few LFRs and just general questing and it seems like Destro is much easier to quest with, but also my DPS in the raids seems much better as Destro as well. Is this a haste issue? If so when at what level haste does Affliction overtake for DPS?
whoops forgot to post from my lock
Aff damage is extremely reliant on when you do your shard dumps. If done correctly 40-50% of your total damage is focused on an 8 second window that occurs every minute. So ultimately, just like most specs it very dependent on your rotation. It is a possibility that you’re not playing affliction optimally. Also, gear always helps.
If you provide logs I may be able to assist.
I guess that was my concern, is this a L2P issue? I’ve been following the icy veins guide and remember them saying the same thing about the PS window. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something as far as a haste point where affliction takes over.
Hard to tell if it’s an L2P issue without logs. Depending on the boss you were doing you damage can fluctuate quite a bit. Also with your ilvl I wouldn’t be expecting to top the charts in most raids. All that being said, You shouldn’t be doing less damage as Aff compared to destro. I would imagine even with your iLvl that in pure single target fights; Aff should beat destro by a noticeable margin. If you ever have logs that you can provide I will be happy to help.
Thank you for the replies, I think you’ve answered my question fully. I think I honestly just need to practice affliction more thanks a ton!
been told there are weakaura profiles that “just play the spec for you” but the claim is never substantiated. Maybe you can look for those.
This isn’t rueful or sarcastic btw.
Aff isn’t a dot spec anymore, it’s a burst spec based off of how many dots you have up. Once you get a decent amount of haste+mast plus figure out the best way to pop trinks and dump shards you will be doing good dps.
Don’t spend your shards unless you’re in dump phase or you’re capped on shards.
dunno why they bother with agony having stacks tbh
Look up the mod “Hekili” on curseforge.
i believe this may be what you are referring to. this addon works kind of like a “guide” to which spell you should cast next. i don’t know much about it, and only really tried it out once to see what it was about.
It might be a good way to learn how to do your rotations a little better, and get your muscle memory for the spec built up. Thats what i used it for on my mage at least. i kind of ignored its trinket and buff options, as i was using them when i thought appropriate instead, but i believe you can completely change options for it. not 100% sure though.
worth having a look at though. worst case scenario, you just turn the addon off
hope this helps a little
Affliction needs to be night fae for one and for two it’s in my opinion one of the highest skill caps in the game. You are trying to manage six dots for your burst windows. Extremely difficult for a new warlock. Destro is by far easier and I would recommend that for a new warlock.
This addon will help to learn the rotation for your warlock

dont use rotation helpers. get a set of dot tracking WAs, like Not’s for example (you can look up warlock WA’s and get a million suites). learn why youre spending in the way you are, learn how you wanna prep, i have 0 idea if those rotation helpers are even accurate or maintained by anyone with any knowledge of warlock.
youre doing more damage on destro because theres no real punishing mechanic on destr, its pretty easy to pick up and understand. affs SR/PS cycles take some adjusting and game knowledge.
as said above, if you have any personal logs, toss em in a thread and just title it “log help” or somethin; if you don’t its gonna be hard to iron out where any rotation hiccups are occuring
It really doesn’t get “better” lol.
With higher haste values aff ‘feels’ better but your still micromanaging 12+ cds for comparable dmg as a boomkin with 5 spells.
Destro is easier but won’t get near aff ST raid dps.
Demo is, lol, well demo. Convoluted as aff but worse off dps wise compared to destro.
I didnt understand in the begining the affliction, but now I do, so basically you have to time your shard damp with your trinkets and your singularity + soul rot combo. But here is a thing, singularity has a 30 sek CD and soul rot has a 45 sek CD. So what is optimal here? To wait and use both of them at 45 sek? so your malifc can clap for extra dmg? Because if you choose to dump your shards in a singularity without soul rot, you will have your Soul Rot up next thing with 0 shards left, which is bad. Then there is this darkmoon trinket, which is freaking boss in the openining burst cause i can get 21k malefic graps crits, but when it doesnt crit i get nothing, so what im trying to say there are so many RNG things about afflic this season, your dps literelly is uknown and unpredictibe. Defftly destro is much easier, but man, affliction is actually fun because of variaty of stuff you need to do. Keep up 4 dots, use other 2 dots every 30 and 45 sek depending on the state of your soul shards, use haunt on CD, fill up all dmg with drain soul which is also an execute. Now what does destro have? Immo + corrupt + conflag + bolt, every 45 sek your aoe thingy fill up with incinerate. its fun but it gets boring fast. Imo affliction is pretty dope, and of course you can complain and say that boomkins only use 5 buttons, well my dude, you can freely play boomy or any other 4 button class, nothing stops ya. Cause affliction in its current state is the hardest caster for PVE and PVP.
…can i use this as a copy pasta…
this is some next level giga brain stuff
My brain must be too smooth to understand then.
It reads like I printed out the IcyVeins rotation page for Destro and Aff, folded them up together, dropped the pages into a pot of boiling water, turned the heat off, let it cool for 3 hours, and then pulled it out to try to read it. Any more typos and I’d suspect a whole ravioli dinner was cooked in there.
exactly…affliction design in a nutshell
Affliction just sucks. I guess if you are into micromanaging your number keys, then it would be fun.
I prefer 3 to 4 spells and a few cooldowns. I like to look at the screen now and then. Demo is ok, Destru is a breeze.
we are joking about the post above mine thats sorta incoherent/bizarre - Manni does in fact understand affliction im willing to bet
