I am currently running a 8700K / 2060 Super / 32GB of ram and haven’t really seen anything to want me to upgrade for better performance @ 2560x1080 144Hz.
Anything specific you all are waiting on tech wise that will push you into a new system?

5ghz 8700k 32gb3200 here, NVME SSD, 1440p/144hz Freesync/Gsync.
Was using a 5700XT.
Recently upgraded to a 3080. It helps in WoW a decent amount, especially in newer zones while questing. It helps FF14 tremendously. Like 2x performance.
My upgrade was mostly for for AAA games.
Playing AC:Odyssey/Valhalla and CP2077, I am 95-98% GPU usage 90%+ of the time. AC games ran well enough on my 5700xt, but the cooling on that card sucked and it was a jet engine. Now it’s much faster, and also much much quieter.
Might consider a CPU next year at some point if I notice a microstutter or more consistent GPU under utilization in new games.
My upgrade path is a slow, in-progress one. The upgrade I did at the beginning of the year:
CPU: i7 4790k -> R9 3900x
RAM: DDR3 32GB 3200Mhz -> DDR4 64GB 3200Mhz
M/B: Asus Maximus Hero VII -> Asus Crosshair Hero VIII
I was well aware of the upcoming stuff we have now but something told me to push for somewhat of an upgrade then, just in case I couldn’t get my hands on the current stuff. My instinct was right - it is now just a matter of getting my hands on what I really want:
CPU: R9 3900x -> R9 5900x
RAM: DDR4 64GB 3200Mhz -> DDR4 64GB 4000Mhz (this one’s simple enough)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW DT GAMING -> EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING
Monitor: Basic 1080p/60Hz -> IPS 1440p/144-240Hz G-Sync
My choices are based on overall PC usage: gaming, multitasking, virtual machines, and Blender/Daz/3dMax/ZBrush/I-Ray creations.
Though with the games I do play, WoW, FFXIV, BDO, Snowrunner, and FS2020 are all maxing out my GPU at 1080p while still hovering @ 60FPS, give or take, but none of them are played at their max settings.
FF14 and BDO run great on the 3080 - FF14 especially. Coming from my 5700XT, it feels like framerate nearly doubled, even with a bunch of Gshade stuff.
The 5700XT struggled on BDO Remastered.
How does BDO play on Ultra mode?
On 1440p, usually in the 100s, but sometimes drops below. Disclaimer - I didn’t really play it much, other than to log into my old character and run around fighting random stuff.
Normally quite frequently but not planning on it until DDR5 is cheap. Possible upgrades
Otherwise I have a Ryzen 5900X with an RTX 3080 and 64GB of RAM. I think I can hold out on that for some time.
Hopper/RDNA3 look massive an upgrade.
Zen4 looks just as gigantic as Zen2->Zen3.
My next upgrade is probably… going to wait til I see the next gen.
Basically waiting until a RTX 3070 or better is available or a 6800 or better from AMD.
My 1080 is starting to struggle but I don’t want to upgrade to a generation older card at this point. Gonna be a whole system rebuild and with the availability issues intel might even have their next generation out before it happens…
Nothing has been compelling yet to upgrade from an 8700k and 1080ti. I’d like better performance in games like RDR2 at 3440x1440 with ultra settings, but I’m going to hold out longer.
I’ll admit I got bit by the bug.
Normally that excites me but its going to likely require a complete system overhaul. Unless there are some decent boards with DDR4 support.
I think I am waiting for Zen 4 and the 4000 series of nVidia and going to do a complete new system and maybe pass the current desktop to the GF for her work/school.
I don’t know though. She’s currently using my laptop (6C/12T 9750H, 32GB Ram, 1660 TI) and that thing is super strong and capable of doing everything she needs.
I’ve got a Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB of memory, and an RTX 2070 Super. I plan on upgrading my GPU when the next generation cards release, as much as I would want an RTX 3080.
I’ve upgraded recently as well. Satisfied with it.
Ryzen 9 3900X to 5900X
GTX 1080 Ti to RTX 3080
Samsung 960 Pro 512GB to WD Black SN850 1TB
I’m still on a I7 8700K with a mild o.c it does really well but I notice some studder here and there in Jedi Fallen order but not certain it’s CPU yet
I’m going to try and hold out for their 7nm chip and build then. I’m hoping for maybe by end of 2021 or 2022.
I got this rig in 2018:
Ryzen 5 2600 with 1050 ti…upgraded to 1660 ti just February of this year.
It looks like I will be sticking to 1080p for quite a while and since WoW is pretty much all I play lately, I may stick it out for maybe a few years or so since this rig can still max out any game I run on it.
i7-9700K with a RTX 2080 Ti, which I built about 2 years ago. Don’t plan on replacing anything for quite a while. Might be tempted when the next generation video cards (RTX 4xxx?) come out in a couple years, but if their release is anything like what we’ve seen with the poor availability of the 3xxx series I might just sit that one out too.
Zen4 is DDR5 only. Good time for APUs for sure but until we get stacked RAM on CPUs it’s ‘meh’ for me.
I’m basically waiting on an AMD RX 6800XT or Nivida RTX 3070 to come back into stock, as well possibly looking for higher resolutions then 1080p for my new build.
