What's the point of the mature language filter if you can't use mature language?

So our GM just got slapped with a 1 week ban for saying ‘Sh**.’ It was not directed towards anyone. He said ‘Oh sh** you can actually farm on this realm,’ in a public channel. Within 5 mins, he was banned for using inappropriate language.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF THE MATURE LANGUAGE FILTER WHEN YOU GET BANNED FOR USING MATURE LANGUAGE?!

Blizzard is like club penguin levels of censoring, it’s absurd since most of us are 25+

In an ideal world, profanity filters don’t give people free reign to just insult whoever around them with whatever swears they can imagine because “lol just turn the filter on if it upsets you”

In this case, yeah that is pretty bull[User was banned for this post]

That’s exactly it, I get it if he swore at another player since that’s the world we live in today. Everyone’s offended by the smallest thing. But he didn’t even direct it towards anyone. Just used ‘Sh**’ in a general sense in a public channel.

Dang, the habbo hotel level of censorship is real.

We don’t need another thread about this. Google the blue post from 2007 that answers the question.

This is 99% the case of always. You don’t find people swearing to berate people in any chat. It’s mostly just normal conversation. Even in real life, most normal conversation, you’ll hear an F-bomb or two throughout most days. That said, it’s ridiculous to ban ANYONE for mature language when they can literally press one button to turn it on, OR EVEN WORSE they’ve clicked the button themselves to turn it off, because IT WAS ON AT CHARACTER CREATION BY DEFAULT!

That public channel he typed in was LFG.

This explains more than being suspended for language. Also ridiculous, but with the way things are going, makes more sense?

Actually it was general chat. lol

If enough people report you. You’ll get banned by a automated service. What im saying is 100% fact. If you don’t believe me. Get 10 separate accounts to report one player multiple times. You’re welcome.

I don’t think what your GM did deserved a ban but this quote here…I’m seeing alot more of this sentiment and its just, for lack of a more elegant word, dumb.

People are just as prone to be offended as they ever were, don’t fool yourself. Maybe not you personally but my experience with people that have this attitude is they are lamenting a loss of privilege…they equate bullying, racist, homophobic or misogynistic comments with free speech. And why not? That’s just how it was for a long time but now people on the brunt of those comments don’t have to sit and take it. Its a long overdue correction and I hope it continues.

But make no mistake, there’s no recent spike in people’s sensibilities, people being easily offended is not a new phenomenon…all thats changed is the demographic of the folks feeling put out.

It’s there as protection for children I assume. Think of it as a parental control.

agreed. its cause people are sensitive andys

My main account is on a 7 day because I was getting bullied in AB by a minmax “more honor per hour bro, just let them 5 cap” dingus and when I got ultimately frustrated, I dropped a few F bombs and a 3 letter acronym I shouldn’t have used.

I take my ban, I deserved it, but I agree. If you don’t want something being said in game, just remove the ability to say it. Overwatch has done it with gg ez into random quotes.

Because you’re not supposed to use foul or rough language to begin with…the filter isn’t there to bypass the rule, it’s there to cover the broad subject of what foul or rough language can mean to others.
The filter isn’t a get out of jail free card for you to use inappropriate language, its for those who wish to not see that kind of language.

Then they should remove the ability for people to use said language. Auto censor the words.

The filter is a choice, imagine how upset people would be if that choice was taken away? I have no issue with most foul language so I have mine turned off. Having it as a toggle allows players more control over what they see in chat. There may be some form of protection blizz gets from having it as a toggle as well if people complain about the language used in a chat. Im not hyper invested in the issue though so I may be off the mark.

Auto censoring words doesnt do anything either because players ability to use different characters to say the same thing. And then you also get random words that are completely normal and safe auto censored and banned. Just watch the way you talk in public and your fine.

it should be what the filer is for, thats why it called a FILTER, it filters stuff. you dont like whats being said then turn it on and/or ignore it… people need to stop being so soft… cant pull this irl or people just tell you to shhhhh and throw something at you…

Agreed.
Blizzard’s in-game code of conduct:

Blizzard’s response to breaking that code regardless of the filter:

They make the game. They make the rules.
