What was Cata like?

I didn’t play Cataclysm when it came out years ago. How was it received? Did the playerbase like all the changes it brought?

Cata was ok. Heroics were hard because healing changed. Firelands was well recieved, but the expansion took a dive after that imo.

I was lucky because one of my fellow raiders in tbc&wotlk became a gm of a raiding guild and every time I came back to the game he would send me a “care package” of boe gear and consumables to get me up to speed.

I liked cata becuase i was mostly a pvp player (not high end) that did some dungeons and raids for flavour, loved the rated BGs they added and that we stuck to azeroth. Did not like the rewamp of all the old zones, i also hated the change they made to horde buildings to look super clunky…im just rambling

It made me quit. Azeroth was a fun and whimsical place. The disjointed leveling from 1-60 was part of the charm. When they blew up the world, they ruined some of the best zones and got rid of the best quest chains. Oh, and then there were Worgen…

They introduced holy power to paladins… Didn’t care for that, at all. Bad, bad, bad.

I wasn’t happy with the introduction of Worgens/Goblins either. It really bothered me watching so many players race change to the new races because their racials were so much better than all the existing races. That was also the main reason why I didn’t give MoP a chance, I wasn’t going to sit in a raid with 20 pandas like I did with all the Goblins in cata.

Pandas are insipid.

When the Cata release hit, it basically broke my class. I went to the class forums and everyone had the same concerns. Game dev (at the time) Ghostcrawler basically gave us all the digital middle finger. I quit before the expansion even came out. I didn’t come back until wod and never really got back into the game for more than a few months at a time until now. Needless to say, I will not be playing through Cata if it comes back as “classic”.

I honestly don’t remember Cata being that bad, overall, except for the old-zone revamp of certain areas that I disliked (like Darkshore, for example). MoP is when I remember the game donning the official mantle of contrived, over-the-top dumpster-fire (IMO), & when I decided to quit the game & delete my original 2004+ game account.

I’m done after Wrath classic. I quit retail in Cata… and will quit classic if there’s a Cata.

I was okay with it but not thrilled. A lot of people at the time hated it.

For my part I enjoyed exploring the new areas and the new quests although the new story was very much a locked-in, theme-park ride.

It was okay.

Nah Worgan we’re cool and just needed the tails and original artwork for them!

First content tier was actually super cool, some of the best in WoW.

Wrath babies cries of “we can’t AE dungeons down while literally sprinting toward the end at no joke full speed anymore” filled blizzard’s ears and they indirectly nerfed the content via massive gear item inflation.

It was kinda downhill from there. Dungeon heroics were tuned similar to how TBC will play in end phase; not hard all but still need to actually kinda do the stuff rather than no joke sprint at full speed to each boss fight like what we did in Wrath by the time T9 was in game.

I ran a guild at the time and loved the guild achievement systems and also really enjoyed the harder heroics and raids. I did not like the disjointed world or how some of the old stuff was taken out.

It really went downhill for me when LFR was added and I started seeing the casual guilds die off.

Most people didn’t like the expansion.

Cata without the cataclysm would be mostly okay. Hate what it did to the world. Some questionable changes to talents, but healers getting magic dispels and regular resurrects is nice. Some good, some bad. I’d rate as generally positive.
I liked the difficulty of dungeons on release after how they were in wrath.

Cats was a mixed bag. Questing was completely “on rails” for the first time (it held your hand and guided you every step of the way, no thought required).

I hated the geographic changes to Azeroth.

Dungeons were great because they were initially much harder (got nerfed quicky due to forum raging).

Raids were good, pvp was still good but not as good as wrath.

Cats is when blizzard started finally losing subscriptions instead of gaining, so there were definitely reasons why.

This was the worst part for me also.

Cataclysm was the beginning of the end of WoW.

I actually still loved WoW all the way through MOP. Absolutely hated WOD, enjoyed myself in Legion again but only due to class halls/stories (I have two of every class in retail, one on each faction).

After Legion, retail was over for me.

MoP arena was the peak, for me. I didn’t try it in wrath though, so excited to see if it lives up to the hype there. MoP was a fantastic xpac for me, overall.

Loved how arena gear and reforging was done in MoP. Wish we had that in TBC too, tbh.

100% this. I will forever remain on whatever server remains capped at Lich King. Everything after that was watered down hand me outs for kids.
