What to do when you suck at the game?

WoW is the only game I play, and I’ve been playing it over the past 10 years or so. I love every aspect of it, esP. PvE healing.

I also love my guild, and it is a great guild for PvE. They do high keys, they do mythic raiding and it’s a really nice community.

That said, it has many people on it. For heroic we usually went full group (which made me miss the days of 10man since my graphics card is dated and I get increasingly low FPS the more people are in during a boss fight), and on Mythics we are on a scoring basis (we score people monthly on a heroic run and the top 14 dps get a spot) and healers rotate, since there are 5 of us.

I’ve been noticing people avoiding me for base-high level keys (higher than lvl 11-12) and, to make things worse, this raid tier has been really demanding on my graphics - apart from not performing well on heroic due to low fps for having a thousand people in a raid, on 20man mythic I’ve been having low fps (around 5-7 fps) on Shad’har, which makes me difficult to turn and move out of Umbral Eruption circles in time, thus making me really prone to dying.

I can FEEL the tension and the disappointment in the air. And it makes me really sad. The reality is that I should step out and not play mythic anymore, but that will make me feel even more isolated within the group - who will want to do stuff with the guy who isn’t good enough for things?

I love wow as a social game, I love doing content with guildies and hunting mounts, achieves and pet battles just won’t help me especially now with social isolation (I live by myself and have not made contact with people for almost a month apart from when I go out for groceries lol)

Unfortunately getting a new computer is out of the question, as it would cost me one month and a half worth of my salary.

the only ones who tolerated my repeated lousiness in-game knew me in real life. my 2s arena partner and i weren’t great pvp’ers but we did enjoy each other’s company while we were knocking out our matches for the week’s conquest cap (this was in 2011)

otherwise i usually play alone, and when i do queue up for group content i just try not to stand out of the crowd

stop healing, start dps. life is easy when you’re getting those deeps.

FPS that low is unplayable. Put a little of your paycheck aside for a new computer. Just what you can spare. It’ll be enough eventually. That is what I did. It will take some time but if you don’t do it at all you’ll never get a new computer.

I’ve tried that more than once. But I love my main, which is a priest, and shadow gets very unforgiving on low fps/ms, for being quite immobile.

I did mention the dps ranking thing I believe.

Also whenever I try to find another class/spec to play I end up finding many cons to all of them…

A new and better computer will help you perform so much better if you are getting 5-7 fps.

Upgrade or avoid content where reaction time matters. 5 fps is not “low”, it’s unplayable.

Yeah, I have to agree with others here. You can’t expect to be in top tier content at 5-7 fps. It is literally unplayable.

Hope you didn’t pre-order SL because you won’t be able to run it if you get fps numbers in 10 to 15 in bfa…time to upgrade…or quit wow

there are no cons in demon hunter

Keep setting aside money to eventually afford a decent upgrade.

That’s just unplayable, and I’m surprised you can tolerate it.

Gotcha. But I’m always afraid of burning my savings to be able to play better for 5 hours a week (only affects raids) and then find out I suck nonetheless.

Thing is, by the time I get it, I will probably have lost my spot.

Can I recommend only replacing your GPU?

If even that’s out of the question, or if you have a laptop, just be understanding and vocal about your level of play. Understand if you’re benched, and mention that you know your DPS is low and you’re a bit of a carry with your awkward GPU situation.

I also recommend training in your rotation. Really get to know and understand it and why you cast which spells in certain orders. You can get high DPS with low FPS–I’ve seen many do it, and I’ve done it myself.

what’s the deal with your graphics settings?

i assume you’ve got everything turned down as far as possible?

You can get your spot back. From the sound of it you’re going to lose it anyway. Start saving for a new computer asap, in the end you’ll be glad you did.

Frankly, if you’re hitting 5-7 FPS on some fights, you need to find a group running smaller teams, or just stick to Mythic+ where it’s not an issue. 5-7 isn’t truly playable. you know you’re detrimental to the team, and your team knows it too. Kudos to them for not rubbing it in your face, but it honestly is an issue.

If your issues in M+ aren’t related to FPS being too low to deal with mechanics (I doubt that’s the case in 5 mans), then you should focus on what you can improve there. Even if you “suck” now, you can always better yourself.

That aside, If your credit is reasonable, you can probably pay for a new rig from places like CyberPowerPC via Affirm, though. A pretty strong Desktop can end up being 90 to 100 ish per month. That’s still a fair amount to add to whatever else you have to pay, but it doesn’t have to be a lump sum of $1400 or whatever you’re aiming at. It’s what I did for my latest upgrade.

Core i5 processor, Nvidia 620 and 8 gigs of ram, with and SSD. Unfortunately on a laptop, so that’s the most tuning I could do.

Tonight I did Shad’har with settings on 1.

I’m hearing what you guys are saying, and accepting the hard facts.

This is totally understandable. But you asked how to get better. The first part is being able to not stand in the fire. If you cannot react fast enough because of FPS, nothing else is going to matter.

It’s irrelevant though. You need to upgrade in order to just play. Especially in SL where the graphic requirements will be going up again. There’s a time to plan ahead and a time to remedy things now. As it is right now, you have to plan for the future. You can get your spot back or find a new guild if it comes down to it.

Why not get a new GPU instead?
