What suits Paladins more? Swords or Hammers?

I’m thinking of whether or not I should switch my Paladin’s hammer for a sword like Ashbringer, but i’m not sure, what do you guys think?

I like both. My Blood Elf has a sword and my DI Dwarf has a mace.

Yeah think it really depends on the race. A Draenei using a sword doesn’t feel right, always has to be mace. Human, I would say sword with a one hander and mace with 2 hander, but really human can go either/or.

Paladins are very hammer-oriented.

This could be related to the prohibition of clerics drawing blood during the crusades, which they creatively got around by using maces and hammers instead of swords, which is why priests in Dungeons and Dragons couldn’t use them without some weird kit or specialty priesthood.

So then that carried over into the popular fantasy for divine casters and then into WoW as well.

There’s clearly no reason a paladin can’t use a sword, and basically every paladin in the game uses a sword at one point or another. There’s not really a pattern or reason for it anymore, so just do whatever you do.

Be cool and use an axe.

Polearm ftw.

Sorry to say it but as a human you want to bash your enemies with the light not stab them. I loved Warcraft paladins when they are shown with hammers that’s why arthas was cool he had a giant war hammer and why it was cool seeing Bolvar with one as a dk

The only thing that matters is the mog. Stun them with your amazing taste.

I really like the sword Dawnbreaker with the current set I have on my paladin, but I’m also running Final Verdict which looks a little weird if you are using a sword (the animation shows a hammer).

I prefer swords in general but hammers feel like they fit better for WoW paladins.

I think I speak for all Paladins in saying “Please fix the Book on the Silver Hand artifact” and either make it a toggle in belts with the proper positioning, or remove it entirely.

Also make the weapon use the pole-arm animation like Taelia does for golly’s sake. Especially if your going to make Paladins grip these massive hammers way up the shaft and have like 4 feet of empty handle dangling.

Legion mage tower mace mog. Only way to go

both work just fine, but if you want some specific examples:

human paladins, dwarf paladins, and draenei vindicators are typically associated with hammers – sin’dorei blood knights typically use swords and spears; i’m not exactly sure about tauren Sunwalkers and Zandalari prelates, since they don’t really have a lot of focus in the story, and i’ve never played either

paladins in general have a hammer theme in game regarding many of their spell animations, but this is because all paladin spells are primarily designed around human paladin design elements, which in turn are based off the Paladin hero unit from Warcraft 3, and Knights of the Silver Hand are really fond of hammers

I just use what looks good, but for two handers I prefer polearms personally.

Most of my enemies aren’t in full plate, I like sword with a shield. Hammers are a bit heavy.

As a general rule, axes for warriors, maces for paladins, swords for DK’s

My usual mog is a sword but I got this spiffy new mace mog from Torghast I am trying out (plus I like maces in general)

For Prot and Holy I use the flail, because I’ve always had a thing for flails. But since Ret can’t use that I like to use the giant 2h hammer from the Holy mage tower.

Sword and shield for me.

For Two Handing? Always a hammer.
Literally the gavel of judgement.

If you’re gonna use a shield though, I always pair those with swords.

Well, traditionally (and I mean super traditionally, gong all the way back to WC2 for crying out loud) Paladins (Humans) would use Warhammers. Sometimes with a shield, but hammers were always their weapon of choice.

This is kind of a mixed deal - the Horde really wasn’t big on armor at this point, so swords would have been more effective. Then again, slaying undead/Death Knights was their most original MO, and they were exclusively evil Warlock possessed skeletons at that point, so there you have it.

Vindicators (Draenei) likewise seem to be primarily focused on maces and hammers. All the great Vindicators, with the exception of Akama, seem to use them. Yrel, for instance. That said, there are some exceptions - Maladaar uses a sword and shield, and Velen’s Elite Guards all use Spears and Shields (not an option for players, sadly).

Blood Knights primarily use swords. There aren’t many, but Liadrin specifically seems to use a draconic Runeblade of all things, specifically a weapon that mirrors Quel’Delar. She’s lately been seen, however, with a unique saber and shield combination. That said, it is notable that many Blood Knights wield specialized tridents, so a spear wouldn’t be uncalled for.

But in Warcraft lore, the knights of Lordaeron used hammers, so it follows that the knights of the Silver Hand would also use them. Regular footmen used swords. Ret Paladins follow after the Ashbringer so its not surprising that rets can be seen with a 2H sword, or 2H anything, whatever is best to get the job done.

I think hammers

As i mog a sword. But the one handed two handed mace animations are boooo

I want the wc3 pally hero smack.

I wish there was a dps spec with shield

Depends on how mad I am at my opponent.
