Just looking for ideas on the kind of challenging content people want. it can be evergreen challenge, like M+, it can be the kind of challenge that is akin to climbing a mountain. I am even open to content that takes farming older gear to have the best chance at overcoming.
The reason I am asking is some think that content that can be eventually overcome, via gear, is not challenging content. I say that is one kind, but there are other kinds as well, so what are some ideas, and don’t limit it to just one style of play, like solo or group.
Just to get it started, I am a fan of the mountain climbing style of challenge, where I can, and likely will fail, several times but as I get better equipment (gear) and experience/practice (skill) I can eventually reach the top.

I’m one of those who like to just go with the flow and I’m happy enough doing that healing normal/heroic 5 man’s usually.
WoW for me was more about its social aspects back when I had a guild. Challange was never what kept me around. Now it’s probably more so nostalgia and the few people who are still playing even if we aren’t in the same guild anymore.

Hmmm…
Perhaps something that is just not about killing, like exploration, riddles, puzzles and such. I actually thought that was what Island Exploration was going to be to begin with. Where we alone or with friends go to an unmarked island, get a hint as to where to start like a riddle maybe, and while we are trying to find the ‘treasure’ perhaps, we can explore the island(s) a bit to find rare npc’s via by random chance or by activating events some how.
Just something I would not mind since I like having to put my mind to work. I mean yes, one could probably just ‘google it’, but the same could be said (to an extent) for other such things. Putting the knowledge to use can be a different matter all together.
Just my two coppers.

This is a fair take, and I can understand where you are coming from.
Thank you for this, this is the kind of thing I am after for answers, even better since your challenge is not based on gear but one’s ability to think and plan, or notice details.

It boils down to personal challenge first then group<always a challenge.
This instantly made me think of the Lucid Nightmare mount. Haven’t gone after it myself but it looked quite interesting when all those people were trying to figure it out.
I don’t think I got that one (least not off the top of me head), but I did work with other players for the one Hive Mind mount which was fun to earn.
Sad thing is there are less personal challenges that enable people to feel prepared for group content, or they just want the personal ones.
I got it, did use goggle for parts, but google still did not do it for me.
I don’t want any more challenges. This game has enough of that crap forced on us already

I would love challenges related to dragonriding, that rewards cosmetics.
I’m oddly looking forward to trying out dragonriding. At first, I didn’t really think it would be a thing that would interest me, but now that it is closer, I am finding myself curious.
Grouping is a challenge in itself, can a person stand beside others of a different mind set ,maybe they should have that challenge so grouping can be done easier with less complaints .
I really liked nzoth visions, i duo everything with my partner and it felt really good working our way up to 5 masks together and finally farming it weekly. I thought that was a fun challenge, was really happy to get the weapon illusion from it

The idea of a challenge should be something that is not required to do but has a reward people are willing to chase after.
You would not be forced to do it, unless you forced yourself to do it.
Not everything has to be a challenge though. There’s already too much content in this game locked behind challenges

And a lot of that content is left to rot by the bulk of the player base, maybe ideas on the kind of challenge need to be stated so we have less locks but more content.
People have different takes on what challenges are person one is you against it, while others it is a race to beat someone to it. That is depending on which one.
And both of those are fair, there appears to be a 3rd though, which comes across as “I can do it, but those worse then me should never be able to do it”.

Gear will ever only get you so far when content is current. Bets are off when it comes to legacy content of course.
The real question isn’t really what kind of challenging content people want because the game gives you that in spades. Normal mode to mythic raids and normal dungeons to Mythic+ X…even in the solo content world, it doesn’t get much harder than the brutally overtuned mage tower challenges minus the few specs who can cheese them…no the real question is what qualifies as “acceptable” challenging content for the rewards because no matter what people will try and lie and say, they do content because they want to be better than others…to have shinies/stuff others don’t get. For many, their satisfaction with the game actually decreases the more available good gear and cosmetics are obtainable because if more people get stuff, it means, by default, them having it means they aren’t as good or special.
It’s actually really sad and pathetic but that’s the truth of things.
As for me? Like I said above, I think WoW is actually in a decent spot when it comes to offering varying levels of content with varying levels of difficulty that you can find yourself in and while I feel there is definite disparity between roles and the content that makes rewards unequal, none is worth losing sleep over.
