What is the Pre-patch?

How does the pre-patch work? Does it open Northrend zones but not raids? Can you level to 80? Did they give any idea to the time frame for all of this? I’m still leveling some characters in TBC, I just started in May, how much time is left in TBC before a bunch of new stuff comes out?

A Pre-patch is the adjustment to the talents and abilities of classes and specs in preparation for an expansion. Also it normally is the scaling down or up of mobs/quests/experience/etc.

The Wotlk Pre-patch will open up death knight class to play for players with a level 55 or higher on a server. They may be allowing it for any new player though as I’ve read. This gives DK’s a quick opportunity to level to 70 to be ready for Northrend.

So Northrend won’t open nor will you be able
To level past 70 until the expansion releases. Historically the pre-patch comes very close to expansion releases. Meaning a pre-patch release means the expansion comes within three weeks or less.

As far as timeline we don’t know yet but it was said to be in 2022. My guess based on where TBC content is at currently would be a late august pre patch and September release.

The level 55 is necessary for Fresh servers (and for additional servers*). New players leveling on currently existing realms can start with a DK, if they want.

Unlike the original release of Wrath of the Lich King, there are no requirements to create your first new Death Knight character. You may still only have one Death Knight character per realm, and any Death Knights created beyond your first on any realm require you to have an existing level 55 character on that realm.
