Does anyone know what will happen to our characters once this classic progression ends? It’s getting to a point where i’ve invested more time into classic than retail. Surely, these characters just dont get thanos treatment. Any ideas? Kinda concerned. The thought sucks the fun out of the game sometimes.
Nothing has really been said about it and I think many hope classic simply keeps carrying on as the other solution would be to send our characters to retail which would first be pretty useless unless we get our collections/achievements/tmogs which I doubt they’ll want to give us.
If you’re really worried about the destination more than the journey, then maybe play Era or Retail, imo.
I don’t think there has been any official information, and I suspect that they’ve probably discussed it internally, but don’t have anything set in stone just yet.
If we continue on the trajectory we are on now, we will converge with Retail, whether that ever means merging onto the same client, I don’t know. I can see issues around rare or unique items/mounts/achievements, etc. that some will strongly feel should never be re-awarded to Retail, but who knows?
Maybe they will just stop at some point in time, like maybe WoD just as a “haha, you think you do, but this is where you end up.” That would be kind of funny, though I doubt that will happen.
I don’t really care to be honest. If they maybe eventually stopped the progression, consolidated all characters to a single server, and said you can upgrade to Retail, but you will lose all Classic Progression achievements, mounts, items, skills, and just simply have your character with a Tabard or Title reward, something like “Classy Snipy” that’d be fine with me.
It’s been a fun ride so far, and at least to me, the journey is far more rewarding than any destination.

Retail just doesn’t feel like wow to me. Idk it’s hard to explain. Classic makes me feel like a kid again.
I get it, but I mean, these are the Mists of Pandaria “Classic” forums, so…

They made a survey about what players want to do with their characters after MoP classic recently, and there were many options:
- Draenor classic if it becomes available (so it is possible that they will do classic addons for very long time, and this question will become important not soon)
- Transfer to retail
- Permanent mist of pandaria
- Wrath of the lich king era (idk how they will downgrade characters but still)
- Classic vanilla era (same questions as about previous option)
So, the answer is: we dont know for this moment. My personal opinion, is if they decide to finish progression classic after MoP, you will have a choice between transferring to retail and permanent MoP era.
I am only speculating here but once, and eventually, the classic run of games comes to an end odds are just high you get dumped onto retail. Its the most profitable model. Even if 2-3% stick around and get caught up in the whale rat race of swipe swipe there than it was worth it. Sure, some retail andys will be mad that they didn’t do classic and get things. Sure, a great many of the classic playerbase will dip or get caught up in a rewind… but thats about it…
Either perma server (eg mop perma) or/and free/paid service for previous classic realms. They have been building that with anniversary and era realms.
This entire idea of retail transfer is cope. Many retail players are happy they have all their “legendary” achievements from back then. They will start riot which Classic players can’t win. Retail is the money maker game.
Best compromise would be they just transfer your appearance and gear but at that point you can just create a new char in retail.
Anyone who gives you a definitive answer has invented that answer for themselves without support of evidence.
There are some surveys that have went out, but Blizzard has not given the results or stated even if they care about the results. There is no way to know what will happen with the future of Classic; the servers, the characters, or the expansions, it’s all unknown.
hopefully they will lets us keep our characters on MoP this time… I don’t want to do WoD, Legion or any of that trash again.
I think it’d be unprecedented and unacceptable to do anything resulting in erasure of characters or their locking to dead and no longer supported Classic realms, whenever the “end” of progression occurs. One of the big reasons this game stayed alive for as long as it has is that your characters and achievements stay, whatever pause you take.
Precedent in Classic implies a character clone, but it’s between God and Blizzard what they actually go with. I’d personally love a ‘to each their own’ clone option since some prefer to return to other forms of Classic, but I’d personally like to merge with retail.
The easiest and most likely thing Blizzard will do is simply keep going through expansions.
They should just allow a character copy with all achievements and items and the entirety of what that character has obtained and done/earned to merge with retail while simultaneously continuing the classic trilogy. That would be ideal, the people that complain on retail had a chance to earn them just like everyone else did that spent their time devoted to playing classic. The only people to blame were and still are themselves.
This, it seems unlikely that any other option would result in greater player retention and revenues.
My educated guess is they are 100% getting thanos snapped once classic concludes.
They said many times going into this that the characters will not transfer over, and flipping a 180 now would only harm their PR in ways we have yet to see.
That or at worst they xfer classic characters over as eitehr template characters, or they bring over collections etc (Nuking a part of the community on retail for good in this process), but add the means to obtain said items in retail again.
they will probably merge it with retail at some point
there’s no other logical outcome, there’s no way they do mop era before wotlk/tbc era
ofc they can. Let’s assume MoP is the end of the road - they will just leave it there and not update to Warlords of Dreanor. There you go - you have your “MoP era”. It doesn’t change their plans with Wrath and TBC.
That said, I want to repeat to all the copers here, there is 0% (I mean ZERO) chance they will copy your achievements and titles to retail.
so they give mop, with a substantially smaller audience than either tbc or wotlk, an era before those other 2 expansions? yep that makes a lot of sense
id imagine they’d close the classic servers before that happens
I put Era in quotation marks. As in, they simply don’t update them anymore. They don’t call it Era. It will just be MoP Classic.
yeah i was referring to any server fully progressed/not progressing into future expansions as era
either way i still dont think they do a forever fully progressed mop server in a world where they didn’t do a forever fully progressed wotlk/tbc server
edited to correct terminology
