What FFXIV Could Learn from WoW

Here is my opinon:

  • Effective and interesting storytelling methods: FFXIV is far superior in story telling.
  • How to create a world that feels alive and open and real: Both have their strengths and faults.
  • Interesting questing and leveling: Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I am a dungeon crawler so both WoW and FFXIV satisfy that requirement. Quests have a lot more story to them in FF than wow most of the time.
  • Better healer design: by your definition better dps and tank desgin too? I like the far faster pace of combat in wow. but I like the ability combos much better in FFXIV.
  • Better PvP design: WoW does have a far supiror PVP design. PVP was just tossed in FFXIV to say they have it. Otherwise they don’t bother with it much at all.
  • Endgame with more staying power before boredom sets in: subjective. Raid encounters in wow much more mechanically heavy. FF endgame is far more punishing.
  • Easy to use transmog system: OMG yes! WOW is so much better system for managing sets. Although the Item sets are so much prettier than wow thats for dang sure.
  • Easy to use bank and auction house systems: Eh. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I do like my retainers selling my items though!

I really enjoy FFXIV but, yeah, kinda this. I’ve only leveled White Mage as far as healers go, but when I started, people in dungeons yelled at me if I wasn’t doing DPS and only healing occasionally. It was really upsetting - I play a healer to spend my time healing, not to spend it spamming Aero and Stone IV while hoping I get a chance to hit Cure.

If you weren’t doing the Manderville, you weren’t doing the most ridiculous dance ever created.

And if you were doing the Manderville, you were well past the point you should have unlocked the glamour system.

…you realzie FF14 has a mroe “natural” world right?

chain FATES, enemy bounties, that change frequently, etc.

FF14 allows you to never out do content. You are always downscaled to a gear lvl that was deigned for the content…when was last time you ran ulduar in that ilvl gear? yeah…

this is where I do question your healing status…

WoW healers are spam this and pray to go some dps doesnt stand in crap. Pop a CD every few minuets.

FF14 healers have variety and actually feel enjoyable to use.

debatable WoW has this considering ppl were bored with BFA stuff in 2 weeks of it being out

now I know your joking…FF14’s AH is MUCH better than WoW’s.
wow ah for same item even if theres 4 different ilvls of it = random and u never know what ilvl it is w/o mousing over each 1.

FF14 groups em all together and you can buy only that specific one at cheapest price.

yes, ff14 has a “meh” UI that isnt as good as wow’s, but the actual USE is magnitudes better than WoW’s.

also WoW doesnt have ANY npc like hildibrand…that chain is HILARIOUS.
doesnt have a person like Godbert…or his wife (the only person he is scared of)

This is all a matter of opinion. I main heal in both WoW and FFXIV, and I find WoW to be far more enjoyable because I’m not expected to spend at least half my time waiting on 2.5s Smite casts while peppering in Renews and Heals. I actually get to spend my time, you know, healing. Like a healer.

If you like DPSing in between heals, that’s cool, but just because someone else doesn’t like that doesn’t give you a right to “question their healer status.”

it is.

all depends on healer class you are.

and if a healer doesnt dps in wow the group will liekly QQ (its ridiculous but happens)

I don’t doubt that it happens sometimes, but I’ve personally never run into that issue in WoW. In fact, while leveling with a friend who was a Resto Shaman (I was on my Guardian Druid), one group accused her of not pulling her weight as a healer because she was top DPS at the time. She also had the top healing.

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t as a healer, I guess.

FFXIV seems to have a bunch of very happy Final Fantasy players playing it.

As a person who grew up playing Warcraft I, II, Beyond the Dark Portal, III, Frozen Throne, Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo II LOD, Starcraft, Starcraft Brood Wars, and World of Warcraft AS WELL AS Final Fantasy’s 1 - 7… I think FFXIV is doing a lot more right to it’s franchise than WoW currently is.

It’s depressing as hell.

You’re not serious? We’re a year and a half into this expansion and we literally know nothing more storywise than in the Blizzcon before it was even released. Drawing out suspense by being vague isn’t good storytelling. FF14’s story is good enough to stand alone in a single player game, and with ShB, I want to say among the top Final Fantasies.

mhmm.
Why I actually quit healing in WoW (got tired of the whining)

its becasue SE being one of the most known in japan they value their IP’s.

I mean they legit took a hit with original ff14 and redid entire thing and its storyline while at same time not taking sub $ for its players to play the game for the months it took to make a worthy game.

(they could do it that way becasue it was a new game and not into 1+ xpacs liek wow, but again SE will admit their mistakes and try to fix em where as blizz devs…“we know better than you players” mentality :/)

It’s incredibly frustrating because most of what I do in WoW now is to prepare (on my healer) to run rated BGs and arenas and the rest of the game is, essentially, dead to me… and if they don’t let us blacklist Seething Shore soon that might be dead to me too.

That’s fair. I’ve gotten to the point where I can pretty much tune it out, and, for the most part, I don’t pug, at least not by myself. I usually have at least one close friend or guildy with me when I’m running group content in WoW.

[looks at my 150+ guild memebrs and only 2 ppl have been active in 6months due to IRL stuff]

i remember the days…

and yeah. i dont mind dpsing pugs, but i wont heal or tank them anymore.
I dont trust pug healers and pug dps are always in a race.

I agree with you, OP, but you said some positive things about WoW in the general forum. This is a faux pas.

This was one of the reasons I tried it for about a week and then gave up in frustration. I found the maps incredibly confusing, the weird walls everywhere, phasing from one area to another was strange. And I googled but was unable to find any simple explanation for how the world was designed. The map made zero sense to me. At least I can look at the maps of WoW and they are clear and easily understood.

I also agree I found it quite unsocial. Nobody talked, I tried a couple of times to chat and got no response.

I also found the character models very Japanese - perfect, doll-like, pretty little things as fake as a toy. No ugly Forsaken, no big green orcs, just pretty pretty people. I know it’s all fantasy but I like my Fantasy with different shades of unreality, not just like something out of a christmas card.

I really wanted to like it but it left me cold.

This is a fair statement. You do have to take a bit of time to figure out the map and how it works in general. Not all that intuitive.

In terms of character design. You just simply have to look at the difference between Japanese markets and western markets and see the major differences in design. I can bet you 100,000 gold or gil that if you took a poll to see what faction, Horde or alliance, is more likely to play either WoW or FFXIV that players that primarily play alliance will likely have far more favorable view of FFXIV than those on the horde side.

Kinda repeating what another poster said, it’s worth remembering that FF14 isn’t an original game. It’s an MMO WITHIN the final fantasy series. Just like WoW is largely based on Warcraft 3, FF14 is based on the final fantasy series. If you look at the other games, the characters in those games are similar to what you see in FF14. Indeed, the classes, bosses, and pretty much 90% of what you see in FF14 comes from a different Final Fantasy game.

In short, if you don’t like final fantasy games, it would be strange for that same person to enjoy FF14. At the same time, it would be strange for SE to create a FF MMO and have it NOT look like a FF game.

I agree many Alliance players would probably enjoy the look of FF.

I also suspect Horde players would prefer the look of ESO.

No they don’t lol. They’re like activision Blizzard. Have you read anything on Square Enix? Their development studio is a complete mess.

They just keep remastering older games. FFXV was a flop imho for how long it took and how it took years of DLC to finally finish it. No one cares about the flashy animations either. The best games they’ve released are Octopath Traveler and Bravely series which funny enough are turn based.

FFXIII trilogy was a complete disappointment and FFXIII-2 you had to pay for the ending of the game.

Just bad. Even FFXIV was a rushed mess until they went back and redid it.

I mean Activision Blizzard isn’t great either, but square Enix shouldn’t be put on any sort of pedestal

Are you sure thats really true? Or could it be because you are burnt out on WoW while FFXIV is the brand new shiny game. I’m not saying WoW is better because I have never played FFXIV, so I have nothing to compare. I’m just trying to put stuff into perspective.

That’s because they wouldn’t allow QQ on their Reddit and their forums are locked down like Communist China. If you want to find the unhappy FFXIV players, go to someplace like r/MMORPG or other similar generic MMO sites. FFXIV’s folks are good at the PR game, that’s all it is.

Edit: Case in point and both on the same day -
