What exactly is spell batching?

I keep seeing people on here saying that spell batching is the worst thing about Classic. What exactly is spell batching and why are so many people upset about it?

is basically a forced lag

when you cast a spell it will take some time to hit the target cause the spells are treated in a time frame, every spell casted inside that time frame are applied at the end of it

thats why two mages can sheep each other even if one of them started casting first

Spell batching does stuff like… for example, an elemental shaman can pop Elemental Mastery, which makes their next spell a 100% crit, but because of batching if they earthshock the second their chain lightning does off, it also gains the effect, giving them 2 100% crits.

Other weird batching can be like, dying inside of an ice block cause you took damage before your block, but it didn’t register till you blocked blah blah

In theory it sounded like something that wouldn’t be too bad.

The problem is they didn’t implement the emulated batch in the way that it actually used to work in vanilla. Things happen all the time in classic that never would have happened in vanilla with interrupt-timings and such.

It’s really annoying if you played thousands of hours of a class back then to see it not work like it should.

Spell batching splits time into divisions of somewhere around 200-400ms.

Everything cast in one time division happens simultaneously in the game.

So for example, I can hit you with an instant-cast spell at the same time as you stun me as long as those things happen within the same 200ms time division.

The name indicates that the effects have been batched together.

People are annoyed because it feels bad during high-pace gameplay, and is poorly implemented in any case. Things that shouldn’t be batched seem to be batched… such as line of sight. You can duck behind a corner 200ms before a spell is cast and still get hit by that spell.

The shaman spell batching mechanics for getting two crits was 100% there in vanilla. I know becuase I mained a Shaman. In fact it was even in burning crusade.

Here’s a synopsis and why there are grievances around it.

Got to love being poly’ed while kick is on CD.

I gave no gripes. It does feel close enough to how Vanilla was.

Most people don’t remember all the details about Vanilla. There’s an extensive “not a bug” list that proves it.

10/10 spell batching is excellent enough for me.

If you don’t understand spell batching. The best example is if you go to purchase items from a vendor in bulk. It takes awhile for it to hit your inventory. Another example is if you jump to your death, you don’t immediately die when you hit the ground, there is a half of a second delay.

No one said it wasn’t?

I just canceled my account because of this… Playing a mage is almost impossible to enjoy because of the randomness of the timing. They seriously think im going to give them money for a 400ms lag full time… No thanks. How far has blizz fallen… Never will be back after this trash was forced on us.

This was removed when seasonal was launched.

3 years later…
