Greetings. The reason why I joined this game 20 years ago was because of how exciting the RvR used to be back in the days where honor kills meant progress. There used to be official leaderboards on this site for each realm and you could check who had the most kills and their current rank.
Rivalries with opposing faction members were inevitable since you faced each other everyday in the world or BGs. I understand that tying pvp rewards to that system wasn’t the greatest idea, because whoever was able to play the most was king. That encouraged people to share accounts so they could keep their rank and standing in each realm.
Being part of a realm meant something back then, but I don’t want to turn this into a thread that complains about retail. We have too many of those coming through by the second and I actually enjoy retail. Not huge on living in the past and I’m understanding of how Blizzard has to cater to the masses who seem to suffer from short attention span and wanting everything instantly.
My question is what makes you want to mount up and take on some members of the opposing faction in the world in 2025?? I would love to see leaderboards back and tying some sort of ranking system that doesn’t reward you with gear or cosmetic because I understand this system isn’t fair for everyone who doesn’t have the time. Maybe separate world honor kills from BG honor kills or something of that nature.
I would love a system that makes me want to know my enemies names and how they operate. How does Blizzard manage to pull something like this of while keeping it fair and consistent for every member of the community?

add one pvprp locked server with cross realm and sharding disabled.
I don’t think ranks really matter much, passive notoriety from just being confined to the people who choose to play there would be enough.
Adding ranks and rewards just promotes things like buff collecting and group harassment, by leaving out the reward it just leaves it to people wanting to play/pvp, sure people will still do their best to shift things in their favour, but at least with a confined population people get known for their behaviour.
This is a great post! I love faction rivalry always have, all the poop talk, it’s da bomb. As a healer sometimes I can get lucky in a 1v1 ganking people but I like denying stinky horde kills on my teammates too, all is fair in war

And enforced faction balancing, similar to SoD & Anniversary.
Lack of real community is one of the main weaknesses of retail, so a lone megaserver with all that would be grand.
I enjoyed it a lot before like…MoP? And then people started using toys to run from fights they picked that they couldn’t win. Or things like sharding/follower dungeons now.

I love wpvp because of how realistic and chaotic it can be. In a world like warcraft ganking or ambushing and just plain fighting wherever would actually occur so I like the immersion.
I also love that with world pvp it’s the only pvp content that technically is always getting new content as any new map is a new playground to explore and fight on. Especially with WoW seamless world a fight breaking out and traveling across zones is unmatched. Such a thrill.
World PvP is just lovely .

I don’t do much wpvp… but if they did this i would totally join it, especially if they made sure the ally to horde ratio was more or less enforced to 50/50

If they implement it, it sort of depends on the state of the game as to whether or not they need to faction balance. I’d rather see more flightless zones for the sake of world pvp than enforced faction participation on a pvp server.
From a accessibility perspective? Locking populations sucks. It helps gameplay a bit, but that depends on how confined the world is. If there’s only one place worth running around at max level, you really feel the faction imbalance. However if say during midnight or something they use timewalking tech to make all of EK and Kalimdor scale to cap for world quests, then you really wont feel a 70% alliance : 30% horde skew if you spend your time closer to horde hubs, yeah contested zones may be rough, but a lot of people enjoy that.
Imbalanced factions feels worse when flying exists, tol barad and isle of thunder were pretty fun zones even on skewed servers, but running around dragon isles and getting dropped by an alliance and then during the fight having another alliance fly over was rough, just to then have the nightelf fear you into a meld mount run away. I’d rather see an npc system where zones are battling like AV and the lesser faction gets more npc frequency than faction population enforcements.
There’s a lot that could happen with the next two expansions, unfortunately I think the devs don’t really care about designing a world pvp system that works, there are so many things they could’ve done to improve the experience in sod, instead of adjusting it so pvp events were incapable of being meta facerolled in 15 minutes, they just left it because “thats all those players want”. Blizz designs fast content, which is ironically the opposite of what world pvp should be, sitting around and waiting is fine in the open world, you don’t need to make every second count like you’re in a battleground (which is a partial side effect of population control, although plenty of players will see a 2v1 happening and instead of skewing it to a 3v1 will just sit and watch, sometimes playing the higher faction is nice just to be an observer)
Just out of boredom ig , I can’t find any on classic cata
I do it because it’s the cleanest best pleasure
A big part of my interest in world pvp is how the zones look. DF zones were beautiful. TWW? Not so much.

You’re raising a lot of good points. I feel like the sense of community was what made people want to go out and get to know each other. Daily screenshot of the day, honor farming and wanting to show off your skills made world pvp what it was known for. I am a huge advocate for getting rid of flying mounts as well, but I understand the implications behind taking a function like flying away from the current player base.
Part of me says make some sort of “hardcore” servers that are purely pvp based without flying mounts, but there are so many different versions of the game already and that would only hurt the player based more. Not truly sure what the correct fix would be, but I would love to play in an expansion where world honor kills meant something.
Combat. Massive Combat. If I am in game I prefer to be somewhere fighting on a front line.

I had my pvp flag on a lot more when I was trying to get the raging bee mount. I would turn my flag on again if blizzard would add another mount like the pvp bee.
What’s the actual name of this mount?? Trying to look it up.
it’s called the Raging Cinderbee.

Woah, wasn’t even aware this was through world pvp. That’s pretty cool that they’re rewarding people for it. Love to see it.
