What are your go to rp resources for journals?

I’ve been working on a few writing projects while I’ve been unwell for other things, one of which involves ic journaling, and another involves sharing written reports, etc.

I’m aware google docs is and has been used for both of these, with styling choices, but I’m looking for more site options to consider. And with the ability for others to share their own journaling and reports too. Kanka is a second thought, though a lot of it feels overkill for what I want and am doing.

The addon Trp3 has an extension available that, among other things, allows for the creation of books and similar documents. Such items could be made tradeable in game, though I never made anything with that intent when I used it.

I know it’s not in vogue anymore, but Tumblr is still a great place for exactly what you’re describing. There are plenty of customizations and styles you can apply to your page, complete with background music and other graphics if you’re really savvy. And you can include an easy link in your RP profile or wherever for easy sharing.

I second Tumblr. I haven’t used it for RP profiling, but it’s easy to use and doesn’t require much setup.

I agree with Tumblr. Tumblr is still active and is one of the better places to write as short or as long as you want with ease of posting pictures. And if you’re good at at the html stuff you can basically do whatever you like with your set up. If you purely just want to use it as a journal, that’s all you have to do.

Stick to a theme, use it for your stories and character development pieces. Use it to keep track of IC lists of maybe things she gained or was gifted. Seems like a wonderful idea.

  • Google Docs is good, I would say, as a quick documentation since it will save no matter what. From here you could just copy and paste the info you gather up while you RP so you don’t forget details right into your blog post.

(Or into a readable journal in the item I mention below)

If you like to keep track of information as you RP and want to make an immersive item , you can make an in-game journal with:

  • TRP3 Extended item creation and make a readable journal you can trade with people if they also have TRP3 Extended. I have one for IC notes taken during lecture events and I can let friends read it.

Theres also:

  • TinyPad and the Notes add on that lets you keep track of info in-game like a sticky notes.

For remembering situations and conversations with characters (or even problem people)
I suggest:

  • Elephant.

None of these are necessary , just figured I’d tell you about them in case you want more ways to document your adventures or if you have trouble with remembering information like I do.

Oh, and this is just for fun. Since I have the idea of a journal, it reminded me of this fun thing a player made to create RP desk tops with clutter. Wanted to give this a shout out!

Mm… I’m wary of checking out tumblr again, but I suppose it’s not a bad choice for archiving (I think my worry before with the initial exodus and changes was that the site would quietly die and anything there not archived elsewhere in time would poof) . Pretty surprising it’s still around!

As for TRP extended, I’m very familiar with it and have withheld from writing books and journals within the addon because… Well, I guess precaution? I’m not aware of how much memory gets taken up from making items with bigger code behind them, and with a few of those as personal projects, as well as campaigns, I try to think ahead on those having memory priority. Trp Extended does work well for trading crossfaction (when you can see the person’s trp profile), it’s just a bit of work to get everyone onboard with distribution. For example, it’s common to see people with trp only, or they have extended and it’s releases behind. Or I say something like, " Hey, here’s a wago link to import the item if you can’t use the stash feature," and the person in question has trp, trp extended, but has never heard of weak auras.

All of that is to say that I suppose my choices are down to google docs or tumblr, namely google docs for ease of use(and the fan created features linked, I tend to make my own sorts of assets but I know my friends will enjoy using those) and not needing to suggest anyone participating make an account for tumblr or something like kanka.

Thank you all for all the suggestions!

Of course!!

If anything, use all of these! I write stories, draw and post screen shots on tumblr, I have an in-game TRP3 journal if I happen upon an event that might expand development for Gotosh but I always start with Google Docs usually.

What I like about Google Docs is that it saves every thing and is easier for me to look at when writing stories or trying to map something out. After that, I just copy and paste where I want to put it.

I even use it to save TRP3 Profiles so if its wipes and I forgot to back up, I just copy paste all the info back into my profile. Same goes for journal entries! Google doc first, then paste into my in-game journal. (Or paste into Google docs depending what was first.)

Also, if you like having something out side of Google Doc, and don’t have Microsoft Word, I ended up using a free program called LibreOffice that served me well for a long time. Only thing about LibreOffice is I believe the file it saves as is not what people commonly use, so you might have to use a converter if you’re going to use it for assignments.

Just FYI, LibreOffice allows you to save with file types other than the .odt default one that’s native to it. So you can do .docx (Modern Microsoft Word format), .doc (old Microsoft Word Format), .xml, .txt. rtf, and a whole bunch of other formats. LibreOffice is really great, and I use it to save copies of my RP materials locally in addition to having them up on Google Docs.

Maybe it was just at the time then, come to think of it I think when I used it later I was able to save as docx. I think at the time I had some classes that had trouble with that format. It’s been so long, I just have the memory of needing to always convert my libre office docs for school.

I’m actually having a hard time remembering. I know I’d have to convert to PDF. Oh well, this is good to know though, and thank you for reminding me/refreshing my memory. I should get LibreOffice again, it was a great alternative since I had no way of getting Word and I didn’t even think to use Google Doc at the time.

Def recommend so you can save stuff to your computer and write should you ever lose internet access.
