What are you listening to now? V5 (Part 1)

The Flying Burrito Brothers were considered the first country rock band, Gram Parsons tried to convert the psychedelic/folk rock band The Byrds into his vision but people had trouble accepting the new direction of the group. There’s a famous incident where they were booed off the stage at The Grand Ol’ Opry. Their guitarist Bernie Leadon later moved to The Eagles.

My Maria was remade by Brooks and Dunn, they did a good job but really didn’t bring anything new to the song. I always thought its hook, how he sang Maria, recalled the yodeling cowboys from early country western. This is also the roots of the later folk movement, I guess that’s how Parson’s ended up in The Byrds of all places.

Lyrics

Whatsoever I’ve feared has come to light
And whatsoever I’ve fought off became my life

Just when every day seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded
And now I’m doing time
Now I’m doing time

'Cause I fell on black days
I’ve fell on black days

Whomsoever I’ve cured
I’ve sickened now
And whomsoever I’ve cradled
I’ve put you down

I’m a search light soul they say
But I can’t see it in the night
I’m only faking when I get it right
When I get it right

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate
How would I know
That this could be my fate

So what you wanted to see good has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine

So don’t you lock up something
That you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking
No not tying
No not tying

I sure don’t mind a change
I sure don’t mind a change
Yeah, I sure don’t mind
I sure don’t mind a change
I sure don’t mind a change

But I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate

How would I know
That this could be my fate

How would I know
That this could be my fate

How would I know
That this could be my fate

I sure don’t mind the change

Lyrics

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I sometimes link to live performances even if the audio quality isn’t as good because they’re more interesting to me than a “video” of a still picture.

And I see I have the capitalization wrong on the song title so I’ll fix that.

While he’s not my favorite artist, I like the driving tempo of this song, totally being carried by the bass

When You’re Not Around

I remember listening to this album over & over when it came out. Hard to believe that was 30 years ago.

I was watching Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and they’re listening to this when John Candy wipes out. I actually got to see the production for this, I was at the airport to pick up my dad and they had all this fake snow everywhere. It was about this time of year and it was close to 100 degrees that day.

This song makes me happy and sad in the same time. It is bittersweet.
