Prior to Darkfallen skin being released I’m curious if there were male dark rangers or if Sylvanas kept it strictly female.

Before BfA, the only male Dark Ranger we met was Nathanos, and he was already an outlier, being Human instead of Elf and all of that.
After BfA, we started seeing a lot more Dark Rangers, and some of them were male.
Since some of those male Dark Rangers were High Elves, not Night Elves, it’s implied that they were always there and we just had never met them before.

She expected him to be so stunned by a ranger charging into point blank range with a heavily armored swordsman that he would simply stand there dumfounded and she would effortlessly kill him

As others have said, Nathanos lived as a ranger, and I’m very confident that after he became undead, he transitioned into the Dark Ranger class. We can imagine that all Dark Rangers began as regular rangers at first, and it could be the case that high elf women were more likely than high elf men to be rangers.
Prior to WoW, Night Elves appeared to have a strongly sex-segregated society, where the women were warriors and the men were druids.
Alleria would be ashamed. 
Alleria fell for Turalyon so her opinion is suspect at best.
Oh, I mean Alleria worked alongside male archers. Female archers can be encountered at Alleria Stronghold too.

Nathanos was a male dark ranger and there were some male elves during BFA who became dark rangers. I suppose the major difference is instead of a banshee piloting the body, it’s a specter. Which is the male version of it in wow.

They got tired of being harassed by perpetually irate female elves and their never ending elfsplaining, so they packed up and moved to the Dark Side of Azeroth for some peace and quiet (and a lot of fishing).
