We're porting Retail add-ons to Beta, Come Get 'Em

Lol, in the first line:

Originating in the Buenos Aires Convention of 1910, it is unclear if it has any legal effect in any jurisdiction.

which requires protection be granted without any formality of notice of copyright

All Rights Reserved as a phrase has no legal effect because the phrase is no longer needed to signify copyright.

It is important to at least try to respect the license the addon uses. Some addon authors want to maintain control over their code and people should respect that. However, a lot of addons use more friendly licenses like GPL which allow anyone to do work on them

And arguably modifying an addon with the very limited intent that it work in classic while the original author either doesn’t want to or for various reasons refuses to falls under fair use.

You can modify it all you like for as long as you like, just don’t re-publish it. Fair use would signify use of a portion of the addon in distribution like that bit cycles through your bags looking for an item. If you want to publish that as an addon or in your addon, go your hardest otherwise…

/shrug and a lot of copyright law comes down to whether you can prove that harm has been done in some way to the original author besides them just being upset.

Amazing, cheers! :beers:

So uhh, I don’t really have any authority, but I’m hoping at least that as the OP my topical requests carry some kind of weight.

The intellectual property rights issue is secondary to the point of this thread, and as far as my actions regarding it are concerned, I see the matter as resolved. If you guys want to continue having a debate about balancing the rights of add-on authors with the interests of add-on users, would you please consider taking it to a more appropriate location – perhaps by starting a thread in the UI and Macro forum?

Please, please, please

Good news folks!

Jim/Jn Whitehead/Cladhaire has managed to find his way onto WoWUIDev Discord. This is the Discord that used to be just a bridge for the #wowuidev IRC channel on freenode.net but has now gone marginally official. #wowuidev has been the main hangout for most of the addon authors for years now so it’s nice to see them have an attached Discord as well.

Anyways He’s going to get Clique ready for Classic. According to him the core of Clique is pretty simple so should be alright it just needs a Classic unit frames plugin.

In your Addons folder, check to make sure that the Questie folder (or !Questie folder, whatever) doesn’t have a “-Master” attached to it. If it does, remove the “-Master” part and see if that helps.

ugh, why bother with you.

it does not contain “master”

I got nothin’, then. Sorry.

Fair use has been argued in court. “Fair Use” only applies to your own personal use. The moment you begin distribution/sharing it with others, you’re no longer protected by it.

That said, in a weird twist, guides or other tools which detail where and how to make changes are generally safe enough. Because you’re not distributing the original material at that point.

But even that gets into a grey area with regards to tools and how it is done which has been fought over. Such as the one group that would professionally edit out certain “objectionable scenes” from movies who provided original (legal) copies of said movie.
