There are times I wonder if this addition was a mistake, that a lot of these customizations should have been rolled over into the base race.
I mean I love them, I adore the flavor their racials give to aesthetics. Some of the Lore I like. But what I like may not be what’s good for the game. What is everyone’s opinion here?

I think the lore started going down the drain with WOTLK. That is my hot take.
Everything else followed years into the game or well after the fact. I am not opposed to the races, but many of the significant changes were a consequence of their existence.
Eh Murlocs are stupid creatures, best to use them as slaves.
The real mistake is not just unlocking them for everyone at this point. Like have the original unlock requirements unlock something related to the races.

my hot take:
Allied races was a last ditch effort to try and continue the outdated faction conflict.
Allied races were flawed from the start, instead of being restricted to one faction allied races should’ve been the start of people picking a race and then picking a faction (Or just straight up removing factions from the game as a two faction system in MMOs is an outdated relic of the past).
At least with Dragon Flight the devs seem to finally be accepting that the faction conflict from both a story and gameplay perspective are bad for the game. Allied races gave each faction an embassy though funnily enough said embassy doesn’t have any ambassadors from the other main faction, which is extremely odd.
So my thoughts on Allied races is that the concept of them is good and cool, but Blizzard did a awful job in execution and tried to use them to instead further push the faction conflict when they should’ve been used to finally end the faction conflict by allowing each faction to play every race.
Also when are they going to finish the heritage armor for the rest of the races or is that just going to be forever on the back burner?
It’ll forever be on the back burner. Much like our hopes and dreams.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with allied races, but I also feel they’ve stolen some spotlight from the original races. When you look at the allied race’s racials and compare them to the base race’s racials, the allied races are so much cooler in general.
Dark Iron dwarves, for example, sort of make it hard to argue against making them vs a regular dwarf. The increased movement speed, level boost, and the teleport-style mechanic they get are so much more exciting than … a minor archaeology buff.
If anything, I think allied races shine a spotlight on Blizzard’s need to update the racial abilities for the original races.
Mechagnomes were a mistake.
One thing I dislike about Allied races is the starting off at level 10.
The only mistake was to give velves normal skins.
Then when dark ranger skins would have evened it out they went ahead and gave it to velves too…
Now we got a race that has no idea what it is.
The best middle ground was to make them like worgen. Void form and normal form, like alleria, that’s activated in combat
WoW without Vulpera isn’t worth playing.

I don’t know, I kind of look at them as second generation Void elves. As trying to recreate the accident that made the Void elves wouldn’t be advisable, so instead they teach Blood elves/High elves interested in studying the void their techniques. Hence the Entropic Embrace.
Yes, most of them should have been customization. I think allied races should have all been like vulpera where it’s a unique race on an existing skeleton.
