Well its interesting in the sense that in 5 seasons we have more players reaching 2400 than the whole 3v3 bracket in 12 seasons. Even before solo shuffle there weren’t that many above 2400(except SLS2). Is pvp more popular now that it ever was? Seems like it is.
That seems like an insane interpretation of the data you presented
you didn’t post totals you just posted above a cutoff which only implies that it’s that much easier to achieve 2400 in shuffle
not that there’s that many more people lmao
What have you presented as a counter to my data? You have none.
API is limited by top 5000 which only SLS2 does not fully cover(2495 is the lowest rating in this case), the rest of the seasons fully cover all 2400 players so they can be compared in this manner.
Hi Berz, thanks again for your data! I always love looking at stuff like this because I think it’s always neat to ponder!
It only makes sense to me that solo shuffle has made pvp more accessible and allowed more people to contact success than in 3s, because there’s no social barrier to entry. You just press Q.
That all being said, I think the outlier of DF S1 is pretty significant. From df–>now, there are 3x more 2400 shufflers than 3v3. Removing the outlier of S1, its only 2x as much, which is somewhat comparable with where we sit at TWW.
Do you think this will stabilize, or continue a downward trend with the addition of blitz?
This data shows only one thing, since we know the pvp population isn’t growing or decreasing at those rates.
The devs have no idea how to handle rating in this game and the values literally fluctuate season by season depending on what band aid fix is being applied
Yes and no depending on what you mean. Yes in that it’s more popular due to solo queue functionality with shuffle and solo/duo queue functionality with blitz. No in that I don’t think players really like or dislike pvp anymore than before [e.g., it’s just more accessible now, but not necessarily more popular].
Solo queue button functionality accounts for a lot of this disparity (though it is still generally easier to get 2400+ in shuffle than from 3s (with maybe some exceptions depending on your spec), so that’s part of it too).
I’d reckon there are tens of thousands of players that won’t bother with 3s because they don’t want to go through the pain of trying to use LFG to find good partners, schedule gaming sessions, etc., especially when there is only one unique reward obtainable by doing so, which half the time is very lackluster (and even when it isn’t lackluster, the value/prestige of the gladiator mount fell off a cliff after Legion).
If we just take the SS ladder and compare it to the 3v3 ladder in MoP s15 for example, there were 100k more characters in MoP compared to now, and the SS ladder shows people with 1 round where the MoP ladder only counted people above 1k rating.
End of WoD still had 3k more characters than current SS ladder, same 1k rating cutoff to count
It is worth mentioning that both of these expansions had significantly higher sub counts, however
Legion was a relatively popular expansion so hard to say whether PvP was more or less popular. I’m sure most would argue that it’s definitely more popular currently than it was in BFA, though some will argue that it’s not more popular than first half of SL especially
Numbers compared to DF are very similar which suggests it’s at the very least not growing
