The Dread Expanse gives no indication until the Sha of Fear dives down that there isn’t a solid ground directly beneath your feet while the Inkgill Mere allows for the determined to pass through the barrier allowing them to swim in the Water.
This Water visibly isn’t Shallow nor is there any means of Swimming in it. That adds to the mysteriousness of Zereth Mortis.
