Water Strider Discussion

Yes. In this case specifically, my main who has the Anglers reputation is a shaman who has no need for the water strider mount. I earned the reputation on him so that my alts could use the mount, while maintaining my exalted reputations on one character since that was incentivized until recently.

I feel like these changes are punishing us for making smart decisions in the past.

Yep. 'Xactly. It’s very sad. Blizzard, I love this game. I want to keep loving this game. The more you force me to play a certain way and take away choices, and make mundane things take longer for no good reason, though, the less I like it.

It’s a trick question anyway.
Say you use the strider all the time and he’ll say, “well don’t you think it would be good to have a change, we’re doing this for you!”

Say you rarely use it and he’ll say, well obviously it would be nice for you to have water walking on all the mounts you do use, we’re doing this for you!"

what do you mean a fair price… if you have the water strider you already paid the price of farming for it. having it removed its garbage

I’m personally fine with all of the changes, but I think a good compromise may be to not only get a free piece of water walking equipment when you log into 8.2 but also be mailed one periodically (say, monthly?) in case you’ve replaced it and want it back, assuming you own a strider that is.
Since the biggest issue with mount equipment, as far as I can tell from forums/twitter, is having to pay for what people already had, getting one for free occasionally seems like a good fix.

Mount equipment, as it’s been presented, just seems like a bad idea. It’s more interesting to have different mounts for different things. I get the waterstrider out when I need to cross water… it’d be weird to ride a giant bug everywhere. In no-flying areas, I use a small ground mount… it’d be immersion-breaking to stomp around on a proto-drake that can’t fly. I don’t even use my Sky Golem much because it’s huge and distracting.

Is this even a serious proposal… taking a mount that’s literally called a WATER STRIDER and suddenly making it not able to walk on water without paying for a consumable item? What’s next? Making my Cloud Serpent not able to fly without paying gold for a goblin jetpack?

For context, every toon I have has 2 keybinds for mounts: One for a non-flying mount, one for a flying mount. Out of 48 toons, 40 of them have the Water Strider as their non-flying mount. The ones that don’t use it are DKs and Shaman who can use a spell cast to waterwalk. So it’s safe to say I use the mount a lot since it was obtained.

Cost is a curious conversation. ~50g for a BoA item you can mail to alts would be fine. I would absolutely hate if the cost were more than 500g.

The Strider is my go-to mount for questing. I use different mounts for different things. Sky Golem for herbing, X-53 Rocket for giving rides, mounts matched to companion and hunter pets, and lots of other mounts for various reasons including showing off. The sheer joy of obtaining a mount with special abilities or appearances is part of the game. A part I love. You are taking it away from us. Please don’t.

Considering that’s how Mounts have worked since Wrath yes, as for the price, it should just be free whenever as the waterstrider has been idk free since earning it. I really don’t understand how simple common sense eludes GMs and Devs…

Do other people read these blue posts in the tone of an arrogant father who has already bought purple paint for the walls talking down to his children in an effort to make them believe they want purple walls too?

That’s the rub. Because you (Blizzard) have allowed that mount to be globally used by all characters. And I also expect that is one of the things that Ion eluded to whenever decisions are made and it comes back to bite you in the future, aka, making mounts account-wide and/or not allowing it to water walk for characters without the rep. But it has. For years.

As far as usage goes, once I have an alt that reaches level 20, the icon for the Crimson version waterstrider gets prominently placed in the toolbar, and remains there until level 60 (flight), and then is sporadically used through instances until current max level no-fly zones. Heavily used in this expansion, because you folks placed many rares, WQs, and Invasion events close to and out in the middle of the water expanses. And FTR, my next most common class in this expansion is druid. Any guesses as to why?

As far as price, that’s where I’m going to say that it should be a free BoA/send to any alt/unlimited use item for those players who have already acquired the rep and gained the mount prior to 8.2. But if you need a sticker price, I’d recommend 1G being the top end per item for those same players who already have the mount. Everyone else pays retail. If the item is that inexpensive, and can be stacked by a single character with say a max/unique storage of a single stack of 10 or 20 at any given time, then rolling alts and giving them waterwalking for 1G a piece, for those players who did the rep, would be acceptable for me. I’m probably not in the majority with that response, thankfully I had the foresight to equip my flameproof skivvies prior to replying.
But in all honesty, I still think that leaving the waterstriders as is would be the right thing to do.

EDIT - and regarding the item I mentioned being BoA, it should be a separate item than whatever the standard issue item that will be sold to non-rep holders. You could even make it an achieve, and have the item be mailed to any character that’s level 20 or above or whenever they reach level 20 while leveling.
Things like this are what’s needed, not the taking away of things, especially if your intent is to sell them back to us. To me that’s just unethical in practice, and I don’t feel good in any way about accepting that.

most people end up using the same azerite peices or trinkets because they are realy good. blizz should remove them so we have to make a choice, because working for something you want is irrelevant and we cant all use the same things

That’s… really not the biggest issue. The biggest issue is Blizzard using this to limit having more than one “special abillity” available at a time. Right now, we can stack water walking, anti stun, interact with objects while mounted and still use a goblin glider on any mount. All signs point to that not being an option for long after this system is implemented. This is another way for Blizzard to limit and restrict how we navigate the world.

Yes, absolutely, because right now, all of my alts have at least ground mounts unlocked, and so each and every one of them can use the water strider right now.

But after this change with mount equipment, they won’t be able to do that unless I go back and buy, for each of them, that equipment and then put it on every one of my alts.

Maybe I’m just a big dumb cow, but to me, that does not seem like it is a compelling game mechanic, nor is it rewarding (in fact, just the opposite because it will cost time and gold to do it, whatever that “discount” turns out to be), and most importantly, IT IS NOT FUN having to do more work to make a mount that I already grinded for work the way it used to work!

This is a game, it is supposed to be fun. Taking things away from us that we worked hard and grinded to earn, and forcing us to jump through additional hoops to get back to where we used to be IS NOT FUN!

I have a bunch of special use buttons on one action bar for each of my toons: one for the water strider to walk on water, another for an underwater mount to swim through water faster, another for the repair mammoth to fix things, another for the yak to transmog things, one for the sky golem on my toons with herbalism, and another for a flying two seater mount to give rides to people. Whenever I need any of those special abilities, I use the appropriate mount.

Those special abilities is what justifies the cost and/or grind to obtain those special mounts. Personally, I only use them when I need to, otherwise I have other default mounts for ground and flying travel for each of my toons, almost all of them different between the toons.

If Blizz thinks that there is a problem with people using the water striders too much or too often, then maybe Blizz should have thought about that before Blizz designed an expansion with so much water and terrain that makes having that water walking ability practically a necessity. And if people don’t want to use that mount, they can use water walking potions that they make themselves or buy to give any mount that ability.

What’s next? Add equipment to make any mount able to swim fast in/under water? Add equipment that makes any currently ground only mount able to fly?
Equipment to add a seat or two to any mount to carry other people? Equipment that adds a repair person to any mount? A vendor to any mount? A transmogger to any mount? An AH trader to any mount?

This is just PortalGate 2.0: adding something new to the game only to also simultaneously remove something from the game and pretend that it’s not a problem or that the players are just complaining to complain.

And then yet once again, after days and dozens of threads and thousands of posts, we get the obligatory blue post that “we hear your feedback but aren’t going to change our plans because reasons” as if that should somehow be considered an effort to “improve communications” as is often promised but rarely delivered and really just serves as yet another example of the ever expanding disconnect between the Blizzard and their players.

10 or 20 gold bothers me, since it is free for all of my alts now.

How would the players who purchased the more expensive mounts, with special abilities (traders, transmog, AH) feel if Blizz decided to do the same thing for all the other mounts?

Would that be fair?

The fact that it took more time and effort, rather than just paying gold, makes my investment in my water strider as big a deal as anyone who paid for one of these mounts.

I am not happy with the idea that Blizzard can make you pay, or work to obtain something, then just change it in any way that they choose…and then charge you for it to boot.

It’s really creepy - but it’s true.

With all the stuff they’ve been doing, not doing, ignoring, not-communicating - for me this is turning into the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Except that it’s not a straw - it’s a wrecking ball through the foundation of any motivation I have to pay this company. Why?

It shows a complete lack of respect for the players when they ignore the most common idea/request/change posted by their customers on their own forums.

It shows how they’re willing to take something you’ve already earned, charge you to get it back, and set themselves up to be able to take it away and continuously re-charge you to get it back in the future.

It show’s their inability to communicate any better than they have in the past and that they’re willing to cherry pick the minority of comments that support their view.

It show’s how they’re willing to contradict stances they’ve taken in the past - with bleeding gold from it’s players as a reason that makes the most sense when you see that the most suggested idea would still accomplish their goals and would conversely not charge players to gain back what they’ve already earned and have been enjoying for years.

This whole thing just feels slimy.

I already can’t help that my taxes pay for the slithering politicians that are making my life miserable - I can at least stop my money from flowing to this company that is willing to do the things I listed above.

But…I already do. Barding, potions, glider. Any mount can give you the benefit of all these things.

With this change, and the nerfing of the strider, I’m just about certain that Blizzard will remove the functionality of things like barding and stirrups so that players won’t have the option to use multiple buffs on their mounts.

This right here is the TRUE reason for this ridiculous move and the pure refusal of Bornakk to do anything but ask asinine questions such as “How much do you think is fair and reasonable to charge you for something you have already enjoyed for free for years?” Although to be fair to Bornakk that really does seem to be the new quality standard for Blizztavision CM’s - pick one post out of thousands that agrees with the Blizztavision position and highlight it, and ask disingenuous questions of other posters who disagree/dislike/hate the Blizztavision position.

The nerfing of gold production through any other means but farming (which meets their time played metrics, especially by multi-box farmers), and the removal/replacement of other items/things can always be brought back to 2 points - more time spent in-game or more tokens bought for gold! Travel time gets increased, more time spent logged in - funny how new portals are on edges of continents like Azsuna & Jade Forest! Cost of everything up, more gold needed - thanks heavens a token is only a button away! There’s nothing wrong with a company making as much money as the can, but at least be honest about it!

I know that I and many of my friends are exploring our options given patch 8.2 on the PTR better deliver the goods.

And then they’ll make parts of the next expansion barely playable with anti daze, and other parts barely playable without parachutes - which will be made with next expansion’s crafting, so no idea what they will cost, and you’ll be continually having to buy new equipment with each change of scene.

Don’t encourage someone to hold a (metaphorical) dagger to your throat like this if you don’t want it cut.
