Keep it as a legacy buff for those that earned it pre 8.2 or make it so it can’t use the new system. Problem solved. Bunch of incompetents
I’m thinking of how this could trigger someone… but I’m sure theres a way SOMEONE will complain about it.
In a cruel twist of irony Blizzard has mistakenly decided the water strider is the literal bug that needs fixed.
As others have said, the should not remove the functionality of the water strider. As someone who has both, it feels kinda crummy to have spent that much time grinding rep/fishing to have them yank its perks away. Just make it so it will not benefit from mount equipment and everything should be good.
Personally, I love the idea of being able to water walk on non-water strider mounts. But we shouldn’t remove things that people earned.
Edit: Also, the new system shouldn’t use consumables. It should be a drop-down menu like selecting a PvP talent. You buy/craft the mount equipment, it then unlocks the talent that can be selected from the mount equipment menu on any 20+ character. This way we won’t need to buy and send equipment every time we make a new character or want to change equipment.
This is where there needs to be clarification regarding the upcoming change, because if they implement the mount equipment per mount, what changes?
Players will still swap mounts from one with a waterwalking ability to one with x ability.
Does the effect get applied to the player, or the mount?
If applied to the mount, then is it character specific or account specific?
And like I said, if it is applied to the mount, you’re still following the current method of swapping to walk on water, then swapping to whatever. But in this case, your waterwalking won’t be limited to just waterstriders.
I would speculate that more players would prefer that their waterstriders remain as is, and be excluded from the upcoming system, allowing them (the striders) to waterwalk and only waterwalk, versus players who would want their waterstriders to have access to the other abilities.
For the record, I’m not at all happy with this, but from Blizzard’s POV they had to nerf the water strider or the new equipment would be meaningless. If they’d left it untouched, almost everyone would take the anti-daze equipment (okay, not Blood DKs), keep using the water strider on water, and nothing would change.
And, not to sound all conspiracy-theorist, but I wouldn’t be surprised given a) the equipment is per character, covering all mounts (bar sky golem), b) the buffs are water walking, daze, or slow fall, and c) the equipment is destroyed if you want to swap to a different buff, that we’re going to see a change to the currently available barding and, possibly, even goblin gliders. All in the name of allowing us to make ‘meaningful choices’.
If gliding/slow fall is made available only to engineers (and mages/priests), and maybe barding is still available, but only to leatherworkers, players will have to make ‘meaningful choices’ about their mount equipment. I dearly hope I’m wrong, but I’ve developed kind of a fatalistic outlook lately, and the whole meaningful choices schtick has come up before in BFA.
I’m concerned about Druid Travel form. I currently use Travel form on my Druid over other mounts for efficiency reasons. With the addition of Mount Equipment, will this make Travel form a lesser mount than what is on LIVE servers?
That’s actually a good question.
As to the topic. My main is a DK so its hard for me to care, but I wont lie it is kinda annoying that you had to fish to get that mount. I wouldnt have advocated getting rid of its ability, but meh. I guess water walking will be valued more now. I guess that’s something? Not a major deal either way though, but I also never wanted it because I didnt need it, my other class I play the most is a shaman… so ya.
I could see being annoyed by this if those were not my main classes.
That’s always the question, isn’t it? Because this is a rather extensive change just to save us from water walking being restricted to a mount some players dislike.
Like artifact weapons and azerite armor, it smacks of moving things to an external system so they can build “content” around making us earn the same things all over again each expac. Which is something Ion claimed they were going to move away from in his last Q&A. I was cautiously optimistic when he said they’d learned that temporary abilities didn’t work, but seeing them start down the path of external mount abilities just makes me think it was a case of Ion saying what players (or, more likely, youtubers) wanted to hear, and the actual design philosophy remains as focused as ever on “rental gear” systems.
I’ll be happy either way using my water strider hunter pet. It allows me to water walk with any mount I choose. Best of all , it was 100% free for me. Sorry if this has been said, I kind of skimmed over some of the posts.
Water walking will be a obtainable trait with this mount system. They dont want a way for people to work around this trait, unless they naturally have the ability to do so. Essentially, they want you to grind it out again regardless of the reasoning behind it.
Sure glad this new mount equipment system is going to be completely useless for me
Water walking: dk water walking is better
Anti daze: tanks don’t get dazed
Thanks for f-ing up my water strider tho, that’s time spent on a rep grind down the drain
Right? making sure to put in time for your dailies everyday, competing with others to kill mobs, also having to go to the dark moon fair then back to pandaria just to take advantage of the rep bonus all that time your never getting back.
This is my fear, definitely.
I wish Blizzard would stop trying to parent me into making “meaningful choices”, and simply give me a variety of options to choose from, without tossing any penalties into the mix.
I think you missed my point. It will be an external trait, rather than an innate ability. Similar to how our characters stopped gaining talents of their own, and had all new talents moved to artifact weapons, and then azerite gear. The use of external systems over innate abilities makes it far easier for them to remove those abilities in the future, and require us to reobtain the lost abilities.
Considering how much of what our toons lost to artifact weapons was never reimplemented, I’m not comfortable with the idea of our mount abilities also becoming transient and externally based. It’s not a matter of what equipment is available, it’s the system itself that worries me.
1 mount is losing the automatic ability to walk on water. Over 500 mounts are now getting it as an option. Check your maths. This is something being added to the game.
Any reason why you couldn’t leave the water striders alone and treat them like the Sky Golem?
So, the equipment appears to be character-wide (otherwise it would be absurdly expensive and annoying to try to equip every single mount), if strider water walking is removed and I need a particular piece of equipment to replace it, that basically means that if I don’t want to lose something I’ve had for years I’m locked in to that one piece of equipment on any toon that doesn’t have a water walking spell.
If, on the other hand, the strider kept water walking but didn’t count equipment, I could choose to either equip something like anti-dazing for when I’m on land and then switch to the strider for water, or use the water walking equipment and water walk on any mount. That gives me an actual option that the system as it is currently presented does not.
Well, no, not if the water strider were treated like the Sky Golem. This would make you have to choose;
A] Water strider, but risk being dazed
B] Swim, but I won’t be dazed
I think the best middle ground option would be to keep the passive for water walking on the strider mount, but disable the option for that mount to use mount equipment.
Just like how the sky golem can’t use mount equipment due to herbalism passive, do the same for the water strider.
This is the option I’ve read in many comments and agree would be the best option.
