What customer has said “Please remove the water walking ability that we earned away from the water strider and make us buy the ability again, and again and again?”
Adding a slot to make that character’s mount more usable until we are given flying back is a great idea. To remove the inherent water walking ability from the strider is just not something the customer has asked for or wanted. Why do we have to buy it back?
That would be interesting, have some have allow for a farther jump, some with water walking, some with gliding in no fly zones (likely the ones that have wings or the like).
Also will they rename the Water Strider to something else once it doesn’t stride on water without equipment?
Even as someone with a massive amount of alts, I don’t particularly mind the cost since it’s so cheap, but it does feel a little weird to have something we had for free be changed to cost something, even if it was one copper. It would be different if mounts weren’t account wide but that’s been the case for a long time now, and that includes the perks that come with certain mounts. So even if only one character earned the water strider, they really earned it for their entire account - including the water walking ability.
Again, it isn’t a big deal to me personally, but I would be interested in hearing the reasoning behind it and I think it may quiet down some of the doom and gloom speculation surrounding the decision.
Honestly if you want to know a players perspective on how an alt should be treated with this account wide stuff for the mount here is how I feel.
Mounts became account wide I believe during the MoP prepatch. So all you characters got the mount when it was made.
The only way I will ever like this change is if the only way to get the water walking is to be the owner of either water strider.
Want a kul tiran? A void elf? A zandalari? any of the allied races? Well go do the rep. If you want the water walking then go do the water walking rep or go play a DK or shaman or warlock. Oh wait you took the water walking from warlocks.
If it cost me 40g per alt to unlock all of my transmits I wouldn’t be be crying about it on the forums. You literally can pay for like 8 alts by killing the world boss quest.
And then Blizz releases a zone packed with mobs that instantly daze you, and you have to switch equipment… then there’s another zone that’s 90% water, and you have to switch back… have fun switching back and forth back and forth.
And then this xpac’s equipment isn’t usable in the next xpac, and you have to buy all new equipment all over again.
I think if there were more abilities, and they had more interesting effects, it wouldn’t be looked so poorly upon. I switch mounts all the time. I have the golem for my herbalists, I have my strider, my yak, and I always have a passenger mount (single passenger), underwater, and then my litemount addon for random ground or flying mounts. Every time I mount, I have to make a choice on what I am doing. The problem with the current system, though, is that unless you are carrying someone, the brief need for mammoth/yak/longboi, or you are herbing and don’t use the consumable that lets you interact with stuff, there is no reason NOT to use a water strider. When the option is “use a mount” or “use the same mount but it can walk on water,” you will always be incentivized to use the mount that walks on water.
If they had MORE selections of mounts with different abilities, and had more interesting abilities, then switching wouldn’t feel so bad. Make each category have at least half a dozen mounts to choose from, if not more. Imagine:
Daze-immune mounts
Mounts that can jump higher
Mounts that cannot take fall damage
Mounts that you can herb/mine/skin on
Water walking
Swimming
Mounts that run faster than normal mounts (like 20% faster stacks with other benefits)
Passenger mounts
Immune to slows/stuns/grips/etc (warmode friendly!)
Now, there are a lot of options, and what you do might really matter. In Voldun and have a long run? Use a faster mount. Out farming herbs and ore? Use the interacting mount. Running through a bunch of mobs? Daze immune. If I had to actually CHOOSE, then I would do so based on what I’m doing and why. That would be player choice AND would lead to people picking more mounts.
So what your saying is we have to take that horribly inconvenient portal to the middle of nowhere in Pandaria and wait 5-7 mins as the flight point take us to the anglers every time we want to put it on an alt? Grays blizz you guys have reached an all new level of stupid/ out of touch with what the customer base wants. STOP trying to artificially raise play time in order to appease your stock holders and instead work to make something your PAYING customers want. Keep it up you already lost at least 50% of the players from the launch of BfA let’s just keep making it harder to justify staying around…
If they insist in doing this without feedback from the players, they should at least let us choose which mounts we want to be water walking, which daze immune, which can glide, etc… Not one option for all our mounts.
Plus this would not be a problem if flying was not taken away from us this long, maybe max level, but no longer. I have only heard of devs (which may or may not play the same game we do) and a few rp and world pvpers that love long ground travel.
#1: Semantics. Let the thing do what it’s named for.
#2: Unlocked an Bought my striders ‘when it was hard’. BECAUSE of the account-wide benefit they offered and the lack of zone restrictions.
Analogy:
Imagine I sold you a bottle of juice. You drank some of it. I suddenly take back the part you haven’t consumed yet. You object! “Hey, I paid for that.” I smile and say “You paid for the bottle buddy, you can keep that! But to be ‘fair’, you can have ONE MORE SIP of juice. After that you pay. Cool?” No. Not Cool. Not cool AT ALL.
#4: I had FREE CHOICE. To use a WW mount or not. Now I’ll have to PAY EACH TIME to exercise that choice, because it’s all or nothing on all mounts.
#5: I don’t need or want “No Daze”. I’m fine at navigating through mobs without getting stunned on all my alts (I have one of every class).
#6: I don’t need or want saddle-chute. Parachutes are not steerable in WoW. I’ll get stuck in a trees or dropping into an angry mobs. I’ll use a glider instead, thanks. At the rate I use them, they’re way cheaper than the expected mount equipment cost… assuming they not ‘surprise-nerfed’ in 9.0.
#7: Mount equipment’s one (slight) benefit, to me, is vanity. I have 402 mounts. I use 40 regularly. And yet… I don’t really want or need to use something other than striders for water walking. Variety would be nice, variety is (obviously) not the problem or Blizzard could have addressed it MANY other ways.
#8: “WW ALWAYS ON” is a bad idea. Especially after we unlock flying because we will -forget- when we return to no-fly zones that leaping into water WILL DAMAGE AND KILL US, if we still have inflatable boots equipped.
So to summarize:
The new mount equipment system has nearly no value to me, it introduces problems that I don’t have now, and it imposes choice costs that I HAD ALREADY FINISHED PAYING FOR LONG AGO.
Let me put something to you to clarify. I left August 26 last year because I saw the writing on the wall. I watched from the sidelines as people fled the game while people were denying problems. I come back for a free weekend, buy a token for game time cause why not, and 3 weeks in I see the same dev behavior and bootlicker mentality that made me leave before.
NOW, I can assure you that I don’t give one turd if you agree or not. I will once again be playing other games and laughing as you struggle to convince people that stupid dev decisions are fine.
Just because I think it is wrong for devs to take away something we earned before and charge for it(which is a bad trend in gaming right now) does not mean I need you to come along. In my world, you don’t exist. /shrug
Gave it a quick try on the PTR and here’s one very big difference: with the mount equipment, if you’re in water but not mounted, and you mount up, you cannot walk on water at all.
With the water striders, all you needed to do was mount up and “jump up” onto the water surface. You cannot do that any more.
Equipment is no longer “inflatable mount shoes” but instead is called “Anglers Water Striders”, presumably so they can say you can still walk on water with water striders
Oh, and the excuse Nat Pagle gives in the mail he sends you with the equipment is right up there with the infamous Timeless Isle no-flying excuse ('it’s permanently sunset"… oookayyyyy…)
“During our research into water walking we caused irreparable harm to the water strider population, and they lost their innate ability to walk on water.”
