Was Cataclysm the

This is pretty subjective. People have always complained.

I loved early Cataclysm, personally. I liked the zones, the questlines, Heroics mechanics and designs, and having 3 raids for the first raid tier was fun, too!

100% yes.

It is the expansion where the feel of the game went from Classic to Retail.

The destruction of the old world, with no way to return, broke many people’s connections to their characters and the world.

Cata was only bad because no one thought bfa and shadowlands bad was possible. The newer retail expansions made all prior bad expansions, including wod, look good.

I feel the start of the end for those not a fan of retail was WOTLK. More systems I dislike were added in WOTLK then Cata. X Realm RDF, Heirloom gear, AOE speed dungeon runs were all systems that were added in WOTLK. In Cata phasing and the loss of our old lands was what I disliked the most.

Downhill when they added achievements

Ruined when they removed the talent trees and just gave you 3 choices in each row (diablo 3 talent system lol)

I would agree with this statement.

The end game of wrath was. Year-long tier.

Yes and no.

T11 was fire.
T12 was mediocre (Ragnaros was good), but also it got nerfed too quickly.
T13 was a hot mess

It also ran into problems with pugs in LFD early on and had cut content. Then it gave us LFR which really did not solve the problems they were trying to solve (which is why they rehashed raids in MoP like another 2 times).

It was definitely the worst expansion to date, but they’ve absolutely one upped themselves several times since then. So yeah…not bad in hindsight, but pretty garbage for its time and a lot of people recognize that Cata and beyond is going to be a tough sale for the Classic community. I’ll be interested to see how they approach it because relaunching it as it did is probably not going to be incredibly successful.
