Was BFA a successful expansion?

It’s the expansion that finally got me to quit :frowning:

Vulpera was BFA’s saving grace.

Financially, perhaps. Only Blizzard knows the answer for sure.
For the rest, it certainly disappointed and discouraged more than it pleased.

Along with worgen rework it is the only thing that is paying off. IMHO

Success of expansion sales speak mostly to the expansion that came before it.

Those metrics basically mean Legion did well.

Financially? Probably.

From a player perspective I hated most of it and regret playing at all in the first year of the expansion. I’ve not preordered SL because the first year of BFA was absolute garbage.

Here come the doom and gloom brigade

Pre-orders for the expansion were pretty high, so I think financially it was. But lots of us in guilds saw our guild die off in the middle of it. So player opinion wise it might not have been. I didn’t necessarily enjoy all of the mess of systems in the game. But still enjoy the game itself.

Apologies if my opinion offends you.

BfA was a big test of an expansion. Whether or not it was successful will be determined by the state of SL and how successful that turns out to be. But BfA as a standalone expansion is not successful.

By what regard is successful defined? If by success you mean copies of it sold then it has been successful. If you define success on player retention or satisfaction I think it could quite easily be defined as a failure.

Apologies if my comment triggered you

Yup. I’m sure all their play-time metrics are sky high right now because of the 8.3 chores.

In my opinion? Yes, it definitely was.

Obviously, people are all going to have differing viewpoints on every little minute point, but for me, I found much more of the xpac to be fun, engaging, and entertaining than not.

I enjoyed the story and characters thoroughly; Nathanos was delightfully devilish and one can never forget Bwonsamdi. Flynn Fairwind was also a great addition, and the whole story line involving Jaina and her mother was really quite well done. In fact, all of the zone stories I found to be really interesting and engaging.

On top of that, all of the zones were masterfully crafted and detailed; Drustvar in particular stands out, but Zuldazar was incredibly engrossing and filled with lots to do as well.

Islands were a fun and quick diversion if you weren’t hell-bent on grinding them to death, the raids were all quality with interesting bosses and wonderful design; Battle for Dazar Alor I think will go down in the books as one of the best raids of all time.
Warfronts were admittedly a flop, but only b/c Blizz didn’t put enough effort into making them challenging at the start of the xpac (heroic mode should have been around the whole time).

And 8.2 was one of the most fun and addictive patches I have gotten to play! The combo of both Nazjatar and Mechagon, the massive scale, the essence system, the reduction of Azerite Armor, all of the new collectibles/cosmetics, the story. Everything about that patch cycle was great (outside of non-account bound essences).

And for all of the problems with 8.3, Horrific Visions are a superb piece of gameplay; endlessly re-playable and challenging. Perfect for solo or group runs, always pushing you to test your limits, and a wonderful sign of what to expect with Torghast in Shadowlands.

BfA certainly had some issues, but there is so much good that was part of the xpac that I found it to be an overall success. Ofc it wasn’t as good as legion, but putting it below WoD, which had some of the most disappointing content updates imaginable, is so hyperbolic and unfair that i can’t take anyone who compares them seriously.

And with all of the lessons that they have learned from the failures of BfA, I am extremely optimistic for Shadowlands! Beta couldn’t come fast enough so we can get to giving them constructive feedback.

You just seem to imply that there is nothing wrong with the game.

Yes, I received more than my moneys worth of entertainment.

I think it was an average xpac. Everyone always seems to complain and rage each time a new xpac comes out anyway. so, we never really know the truth until an xpac or two later When everyone thinks back and recalls that it wasn’t as bad as they originally felt.

Personally I felt the environments of BFA were fantastic. Zuldazar zones were amazing and beautiful. Heck even the desert wasn’t too bad. And kul Tiran zones were great as well. The quests were good and streamlined. And the story plot was decent, even though I still wish some people would just die finally. I also felt class balance was decent for the most part, with needed buffs/nerfs coming.

But there were downsides. Professions are still useless and obsolete, And I feel having to grind pathfinder not one latch but over several patches is a horrible idea…a sure way to piss off the player base.

Azerite gear was odd. You basically grinded the same bloody items over and over for the same two or 3 azerite traits since many were garbage. It wasn’t awful, but it was a little overboard I felt. I also didn’t enjoy doing world quests over and over…grinding max rep is never fun.

Finally I didn’t like warfronts…the expansion was suposed to be horde vs alliance like the good old days, and instead it was more of an optional part of the game that made little to no impact.

But that all said, I’d still give it like a 6-7/10. Not bad, but not great.
