As this is my first expansion experience, how long before pre-patch is implemented do they warn you pre-patch is going to happen?
And I assume no date or even a hint at a date is out there definitively?

Prepatch is a big deal. It might be a couple of weeks or even a couple of months.

Hmm maybe I asked it wrong.
Usually how long after they announce pre patch is going live does it go live? Like in the past did they make the announcement the day of the patch or did they announce a date like a week after the post that it will be live.

We usually get a few days to a week or so between announcement of it going live and it going live.
We also tend to see release candidate builds to the PTR around the time its getting ready (hence the name, release candidate).

The PTR is the Public Test Realm, basically the place to test patches. It is up right now for the pre-patch and should be for a few more weeks at least.
They regularly put out new “builds” of the pre-patch to the PTR. These builds are snapshots of the pre-patch as they’re working on it,w ith updates and the like. Eventually they’ll be listed as “Release Candidate” which means that they’re pretty much ready for complete release.

Yes, they usually don’t release the date of pre-patch until it is pretty close to launching. And then you can expect to be in that phase for about a month or two at most.

They put up a 2-week warning for PVP and M+ season so you’ve got that long at least til pre-release.
I’ve always noticed the prepatches going live the day they go live.
That might just be me though. I don’t always pay attention.

Assume 2 weeks. Whenever something is coming to an end and we’re being notified, it’s usually a 2 week warning. The same is said for things like arena seasons.
If not 2 weeks, possibly a month, but I doubt we’ll be waiting that long considering I just got an email a little bit ago from Blizzard letting me know I should pick up anything I intend on finishing with BFA.

Generally we know the expansion release date about two months out, and the prepatch is the second of those months. So ~2-4 weeks of notice, depending on the schedule and how long they want the prepatch to be out exactly.
I would keep an eye on wowhead.com. They usually have info up if it looks like a major even is in near future.
Also, a maintenance with a very long time period is often a signal that something big is in the pipeline. And no, there is no hint yet as to when. The fact that its on the PTR at least means that development is almost complete, so its sooner rather than a lot later.

We usually get an announcement when Pre-patch or any new tier is right around the corner (especially PvPers so they can do their last pushes for specific rewards/rating highs). As for the pre-patch, I’m unsure there’s been any word on a specific date they intend on launching it out. The pre-patch still feels pretty new in the works and needs a few things to be worked on, especially Exile’s reach and their cinematics, and also seems rather buggy. So, probably not anytime too soon!
2-4 weeks notice, prepatch hits and that runs for 4+ weeks then xpac launch.
They are testing the prepatch data now on the ptr, expect after that hits live they will open another round of beta invites.
Dont quote me, this launch is completly new in the realm of covid climate.

Every past Pre-patch PTR has lasted 4-6 weeks. So expect it in September, probably near the end. WIth the expansion probably launching the first week or two of November.

Yeah, we will most likely get a date for when the pre-patch will hit a short bit in advance, like a few weeks.
No date yet.
Also, these events have differing duration’s but my personal guess is that the pre-patch event will probably last a few weeks if not a month and will build up over the course of the event.

Based on the ptr currently, week 1 and week 2 quests would head towards this. Similar infact to the opening of Nighthold/Suramar weekly progress.
