Nah, they’re the mages who opted for some online courses rather than going to university.
Mages are just drop out warlocks who couldn’t handle controlling demons.

The mages are the french drain. It takes more effort and money, but is the superior solution.
While the sealant is the warlock, attempting to tame the chaos with quick hacks instead of doing it properly!

Quite the contrary: Warlocks were the precocious mages who breezed through magic academy, got bored, and decided to play with real fire. (And didn’t ask their Kirin Tor overlords for permission.)

That may be true in the real world, but in WoW things work a bit differently.
Only the most powerful mages can manipulate time. Fel and the Nether are unaffected by time. Not even time itself can impose order on the essence of chaos.
Bad metaphor. Mages and warlocks don’t both tap into the same energies so the idea of dealing with water two different ways doesn’t work. Mages do not tame chaos at all, let alone “properly.” They simply avoid chaos altogether. Like cowards.
Blood elves canonically were a bit of an exception, blurring the line between warlocks and mages. Dealing with chaos and imposing some degree of order on it. Enslaving it. But instead of exploring that further it’s been largely abandoned for some idiotic reason.

My human Warlock got booted from the University of Darnassus for consorting with demons.
