ok let me keep this short and simple:
- im an artist + amateur streamer
- I made live2d models + vtuber models
- can I make a vtuber model based off of my WoW character and stream it?
- if no, how different would I need to make it in order to NOT get in trouble?
I love my Vulpera rogue, her name is “Puppie” and I would really love to stream WoW while using her likeness as my Vtuber model! obviously, I would make all of the art myself, she would just look similar to my in-game character.
sorry if this is a dumb question that nobody knows the answer to!
You won’t get an answer from Legal here, and I don’t work for Blizzard. I can give you some scenarios that Blizzard does allow.
- Fan art for personal use
- Artists making and selling art based off a player’s character. These are custom made avatars, portraits, or drawings/paintings. They are for personal use of the person, not for commercial use. For example drawing an avatar of my char that I could use as a PFP on websites - is allowed.
What is not allowed is making money off Blizzard’s intellectual property, representing yourself as affiliated with Blizzard, etc. I think the fine line in it comes down to each character being a personal customization made by a human - you. So a singular representation of that char in the WoW art style is ok - provided again it is for personal and not commercial use.
Does that make any sense? I don’t know the world of vtubers at all but assume it would be the same rules as for fan artists/game char artists.

The gray area is where your streaming comes into play.
If you’re a monetized streamer, chances are you won’t be able to use any semblance to WoW.

People use hand drawn customized char avatars from games streaming on Twitch though. I don’t think use of a personal char is against the rules, even for a monetized stream. If Asmon used an avatar of his char for his channel, I don’t think they would get upset. If anyone is worried, name artist and state inspiration (inspired by their WoW character), or something?
Now, if the person were to use a Blizzard NPC that would likely be a problem. No streaming as Thrall or something. heh
