This is normal. You need improved VW, improved pet damage, before he holds aggro reasonably well. Those aren’t both accessible at your level.
Also, his threat ability only gets upgraded at every X0 level. You’re 6 levels beyond that. Hes good at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60. Until you get gear. Then hes useless again.
I deleted my 32 Warlock recently while I was cleaning house on alts & getting more streamlined. The class just isn’t very fun to play (IMO) & has that thrown-together feel to its design. Also hate the static pet limitations compared to that of a Hunter. They do have some nifty utility mixed into that disjointed design mess though. Heck, even my Holy Paladin is more fun to play (IMO).
Yeah void won’t hold aggro unless you let him build it a little before you start dpsing. Let him get 2-3 taunts off then dot. This is really inefficient though and slow. Tough it out till you get to like 40 ish
You get full shadoweave gear or shadow wrath pieces. Then you spec into affliction and drain tank. Use succubus or felhunter. It’s a breeze once you get dark pact.
Can easily juggle 3-5 mobs with all cooldowns and decent kiting
Pfffft Warlock gets awesome at 48-50. My lock is 50 destro spec and it’s probably my favorite one to play right now while I level one of every class.
You utterly destroy everything with curse of elements, soulfire, immolate, conflagrate, and shadowburn. I have a fair bit of spell damage and the soulfire crits are amazing with the curse on.
And to the OP, I had improved VW before I swapped to destro when I hit 48 and yeah, the blueberry was only useful if you can pull 2 at a time. You put him on one with dots, and fear another that you are killing.
How are you pulling mobs?
My lvl 49 lock can send in his voidwalker, apply Corruption and CoA once the pet has used his first taunt. Then I use Immolate and wand down the mob.
I don’t seem to pull aggro until the mob is already half dead, and by the time the mob reaches me, it’ll already be so low that I easy face tank it or it runs away if its a humanoid.
The only times I pull aggro from my voidwalker are if I start dotting before he reaches the mob, if my voidwalker is OOM and can’t taunt, or if the mob is a higher level. Besides that, just give your pet a few seconds to reach the mob, open slowly with the instant dots, and then finish with an immolate and wand. You’ll be fine. I usually send off my voidwalker to attack the next mob as I’m finishing off the current one and looting it. That way I don’t have to wait much time before my pet has already started attacking.
P.s. I’ve also done the drain tanking method with the succubus and it works super well. I think I like that method more when grinding in certain spots but I haven’t exactly figured out when I like it more.
BTW, playing as Affliction spec. It works well for me and it’s definitely my spec of choice when I have those WPvP encounters. I don’t claim to be a warlock expert though
My level 40 warlock just respecced to Affliction, got dark pact, beefed up my succubus and plans to start this “drain tanking” stuff.
Up until now I’ve been using the VW, and playing like a hunter. Solo leveling works a lot like a hunter. But a hunter has the same problem in Classic: the pet can’t hold aggro if the hunter hits too hard. As a hunter, I usually put my one dot on, then wait a while to auto-attack.
I used a wand a lot while leveling. I used that for damage more than spells. Some guides recommend that. If you keep upgrading your wand, it does as well as spells. In dungeons (on other characters) I see warlocks using wands all the time, to save on mana.
Maybe the succubus is better, but you can’t get it until level 28. I chose not to switch to it at 28, but others prefer it to Big Blue.
