I recently bought the item from Ven’nari in t he maw that should have made me immune to mawsworn Assassins from the eye of the jailer. They still appear and can still attack me and the item is no longer available in Ven’ari’s inventory for purchase. I assume this is a bug or did I misunderstand what the item does as it didnt have a duration so I thought it was permanent.

That’s not what the upgrade does. All the upgrades for Assassins and Abductors do is prevent them from applying the Jailer’s Mark debuff to you which deals damage over time and ticks up your Eye of the Jailer level every time it deals damage.
It’s still quite a useful upgrade since the Mark’s damage isn’t exactly trivial and it additionally buys you extra time in the Maw for each assassin you spawned and didn’t have the Mark applied.

Same thing happened to me. I thought I was buying an item that cancelled the assassins. hitting tier 3 practically shuts of the maw for me for the day.
I still would have bought it, cause, what else am I gonna use Stygia on.

Well then the text on the item shouldn’t read as follows, should it:
" Use: Stamp the sigil onto your body, gaining permanent immunity to Mawsworn Assassins’"
Yet another disappointing and misleading item!

You’re missing a part of the tooltip.
For the T3 dudes: “Stamp the sigil onto your body, gaining permanent immunity to Mawsworn Assassins’ The Jailer’s Mark.”
For the T4 dudes: “Don the Soul-Stabilizing Talisman, gaining permanent immunity to Mawsworn Abductors’ Soul Brand.”
They’re doing exactly what they say they do.

The problem here is ostensibly that the the part of the tooltip where the Jailer’s Mark and Soul Brand are shown changes color and I think people are just completely tuning it out. The one for assassins in particular has the additional unfortunate luck that the length of the text places the changed-color Jailer’s Mark on a new line.
They could probably change the wording entirely to be like “gaining permanent immunity to The Jailer’s Mark/Soul Brand applied by Mawsworn Assassins/Mawsworn Abductors”.

It’s not useless since it means you can get as many Assassins/Abductors as you like without maxing out Eye of the Jailer if you’re camping rares or something. The debuff they apply gives significant Eye threat.
you’re right, they should change the wording on the item to mention the debuff of the jailer’s eye. Also, everyone hates to time-gated Maw anyway. And fix Torghast scaling while they’re fixing their right words on thangs. misleading folk.
While I agree with the above, after the maintenance today I no longer see these buffs applied to any of my toons in the Maw and while I could get away with level 4 previously, level 2 was getting difficult to manage for any length of time. Seems they aren’t applied any longer and also cannot be purchased again.
