US-exclusive external promotions are already exhausting and too exclusionary

For those who haven’t seen, a new promotion for a pretty cool-lookin’ void-themed head cosmetic just hit Discord. It’s presented as a “WoW x Mtn Dew” promotion, and as such it seems the ability to earn it has once again been limited to players in the US.

With the Blazecycle, I was able to freely generate additional codes to give my Canada-based friends I regularly play with a chance at the mount that they otherwise could not get themselves, as long as I continued to buy the product. However, with this Discord promo being limited to one code per account, I would now have to create alternate accounts in order to help these same friends get this cosmetic (and many of them definitely do want it, quite a bit more than they did the mount).

I hate seeing them be forced to miss out like this if they don’t have people willing to go through the hassle of multiple Discord accounts to get them a code. Why is this becoming a pattern? Is it just because it’s being sponsored by PepsiCo and they have some arbitrary limitations in a contract agreement about it? This type of exclusion is really grating on my friends’ nerves and it makes them feel less inclined to even want to log in just due to the principle of the issue.

Mirroring sentiment from this CC thread back when the Blazecycle was first revealed:

Because of restrictions other countries have on promotional and “free” giveaways.

You can’t actually think that Blizzard would make the conscious decision to limit who can participate in their promotions, do you? It’s a legality issue. Talk to your governments, not us.

They’ve chosen to enter into these agreements with those restrictions in mind. They aren’t free of culpability and to suggest otherwise is hilarious.

Sure, because it’s either promotions for the US or no promotions at all.

Considering who the overwhelming majority of their customers are, it’s not a hard choice to make, is it?

Why on Earth would a Discord promo be U.S. only lol?

They 100% did not have to be in agreement with PepsiCo to be able to offer this cosmetic. They chose to exclude players for dollar signs, even though the majority of the player base is not US-based.

Yeah everyone I know that isn’t US-based is asking the same question.

lol?

If you’re counting China in there, they don’t apply to this conversation since they have their own promotions that are entirely disconnected from us.

If you’re not, I’d love to have some of what you’re smoking.

Keep in mind that the article does say this:

As of right now, the promotion only appears to be available for Discord users within the United States, though the actual reward redemption code can be used across regions.

Meaning, you can have a friend sing up a new Discord account and do the stream to themselves, then they can give you the code.

JC, a first world false problem…

Well, most of the entire third world is literally excluded from the promotion. I suppose you’re more likely to see Canadians complain about U.S. only promotions since this is the NA forums and Canadians also play on NA. Also OCE.

Looks Fabulous!

Not from the u.s. and not complaining. Always surprised how easily people get infatuated by promotions of this sort.

Personally, I’m not interested in any of the cosmetics offered via the Mountain Dew promotion but i can sympathise with those who are.

I feel like cosmetic items such as these are better put into the wowshop where everyone can purchase them if they choose (and blizzard would make a lot more money from it).

I kind of like the red fel cycle but I’ll never get it because I don’t want to support an unhealthy product like Mountain Dew.

If the red fel cycle were put on the wowshop, I would buy it (even if it cost double the amount required to buy the Mountain Dew products).

But I don’t care enough to complain about it

Sorry OP, wish they’d just give the stuff out to other countries too even if it meant alternative ways because of another countries laws or whatever is stopping them right now.

Man, the title of this thread is exhausting and too exclusionary.

…to smart people and to those of us that can copy and paste into google.

Hrmm I am mixed on it.

On one side:

  • I can get my US friends to help me get this crown if I want. (Noting that even this shouldn’t be a reasonable expectation)

  • There have been many regional promotions in the past and the current ‘widespread’ coverage of media is the only reason we know about this. I’d be none the wiser if WoWhead didn’t report on it.

  • We can only speculate on this but essentially it’s a collaboration between PepsiCo (who owns MtnDew Gaming) and Blizzard. It would be silly from the Blizzard side to reject the promotion when they have so many US customers.

On the other:

  • It is the modern age of everyone knowing everything and this would have been something signed off by Blizzard. It is understandable that there are US only promotions - but there other countries they can choose to cater a promotion towards also. Haven’t seen an OCE or EU only promotion.

not even close, unless you’re talking about personal opinion.
