This may be a stupid question, but if my friend where to upgrade their starter edition by just buying a one month subscription, they can still party and quest with me doing old content, right? I was having a hard time seeing the restrictions, and it seems they would just be limited out of BFA content until they buy that expansion?
Correct! All that’s needed now is game time. We used to have to buy the base game, but that’s no longer necessary.
By adding game time, your friend would have access to everything up to, but not including, BfA

Correct. The Standard version of World of Warcraft includes the base game plus all expansions up through Legion. They’d be able to level to 110.
They would not be able to access Battle for Azeroth content and level to 120 until they purchase that upgrade.
