Upgrade CPU/Mobo or stay where i'm at

So i’m currently running a i7 4790k at 4.3ghz, Gigabyte z97 mobo and DDR3 1600 32gb ram. I have the EVGA 3070 XC and a Dell 1440 IPS 165hz monitor. I was wondering if i would gain any advantage at this point per dollar to upgrade to a 10850k or a 5600x.

Most of my settings are at 7 with no AA and i’m achieving 105-130 fps depending on area.

I would advise getting the 10850k, z490 or z590, and if you have the budget, 64gb ram. If you can’t afford 64gb, 32gb then.

You’ll notice gains in fps lows for sure in most games, especially WoW.

In new games, you’ll see an improvement due to having wider resources.

But I wouldn’t say that the 4790k experience is unplayable or unenjoyable.

Are you joking? I can have multiple games running, multiple browser tabs open, discord open, Netflix streaming, office apps open in the background, and still not make 16 GB tap out. With WoW, browser, and disc alone, I’m usually using 8-10 GB

Not to mention more ram generally means you have to run it at lower frequency.

My 8700k can handle 2x8 3200mhz ram OC to 3600, but with 4x8, best I can do is 3466.

Yea maybe if you play sub 2010 games

Rust: 4630 MB of ram
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order: 3964 MB
Minecraft: 3672 MB
Heroes of the Storm: 2298 MB
WoW: 1363 MB
Google Chrome with 5 tabs including Youtube TV: 910 MB
Twitch with Cdew stream opened: 497 MB
Discord: 218 MB
LibreOffice with their Powerpoint, Word, and Excel version: 126 MB

all totaling about 18 GB of ram usage, currently use 32 GB of ram

He isn’t wrong for suggesting 32GB of ram either since alot of modern AAA games require 16 GB of ram for recommended settings

32gb is a good choice these days, because multitasking is way more common, but 16gb is still generally more than enough for typical users.

That said, 64gb is ridiculous for typical users.

And on both platforms, increasing the number of DIMMs generally is more strenuous on the IMC and usually results in running at lower frequency than using less DIMMs.

So while 32gb is easy to do with only 2 DIMMs, 64 isn’t, and possibly resulting in reduced performance and increased price for no appreciable gains.

Obviously Griefs was just being hyperbolic - but point was made, 64gb is not helpful and probably detrimental.

Update:
Earlier today I purchased a i9 10850k, Asus TUFF-Z490 Plus motherboard, 32 DDR4-3200 Asus Vengeance memory, Noctua D15 cooler, Samsung 970 Evo+ 1TB hdd and a Corsair 4000D case. Haven’t had a chance to assemble it yet. Using a Corsair 750W PSU from my current system and using my new RTX 3070. I’ll probably have it all done tomorrow morning.

Sounds solid all around. I would have probably gone a little faster on the RAM, but it should serve you well.

same, I don’t think I’ve ever broke 10GB in system use but I only play one game at a time and maybe have hulu streaming a football game with a few more tabs open. Obviously with someone like “you” his demands are different (but also more extreme) so to each their own.

I’m man enough to admit I am unable to play 5 games at the same time.

There, I said it.

Still probably wouldn’t need 64GB with 5 games open :X

I’m playing CP2077 right now, with chrome (10 tabs, including playing a youtube video, netflix video, viki video, 4 forums, amazon, and walmart), steam, and some other background tasks running.

13.8gb used, 18gb free :crying_cat_face:

10.2/16 for me. WoW, Chrome (5 tabs including YouTube and two Office365 apps), Word, PowerPoint, Zoom, iTunes. Also connected to and using MS OneDrive (enterprise cloud service)

Edit: Interestingly, when I tab back to WoW, it drops down below 10

Are these accurate representation of how much is actually needed? Like will Windows just allocate a bunch of memory just because it can?

I wonder if my memory usage gets higher because I just have more of it.

Definitely a valid question that I’m not sure how to test except to start removing some RAM sticks

WoW and many other games will do that.

After some hiccups with bios and having to purchase a new PSU since i was missing the 4 pin connector for the mobo, i got this new rig running. I havent really had a chance to play wow but i ran it in Oribos on 10 setting and 2AA, RT on max and i was getting a steady 115-135fps which im happy with. Ill play the game a little later after im finished setting up windows, my HDDs, etc.

I’m afraid to ask what kind of PSU you had that did not come with a 4-pin ATX 12v or 4+4 EPS 12v connector? Was it a proprietary unit from an OEM?

Corsair CM750M. Bought it about 6-7 years ago with my Z97 and the 4790K. Bought a Seasonic GX-850 this time around. I checked all my extra cables i had laying around and could not find a 4 pin wire unless i misplaced it.
