I was really happy with this expansion, and especially with Torghast – it was honestly my favorite new thing in the game through the past few expansions, and it was a lot of fun; I’d tag along with any friends running it even after clearing everything.
Layers 7 and 8 of Upper Reaches were definitely challenging and could probably have used tuning. The maps are small so you didn’t get much phantasma or many anima powers, which could really screw you over if you didn’t luck out into good powers.
I did Layer 8 last night and failed at about 0.5% on the last boss, after a tortuous run where we needed to have every single cooldown up to down a single elite, where every elite kill floors 4 and 5 was pretty much by the skin of our teeth (we only had one interrupt on a 1 min cd, so needed to kill them before the casts reached one-shot level). Gave up to try again later this week with more gear.
Did it just now and it’s…so easy. It doesn’t matter what powers you pick – you can clear it with no powers at all. I really don’t understand why a nerfbat of this size to the entirety of Torghast was necessary. The TOP LAYER of Torghast is now faceroll, four weeks into the expansion. It’s not going to get any harder, other than Twisting Corridors. It’s only going to get INCREASINGLY faceroll as everyone gears up. What’s the point in doing it now? It’s just going to be another chore like visions were in BfA.
I’m so, so disappointed, and really a bit shocked that the devs caved on this. Seriously, why would you put something new and fun into the game, and then completely gut it because some people are upset they can’t IMMEDIATELY clear it on its hardest difficulty? Are mythic raids going to be nerfed like this too? High level M+?
Just, really upset that a part of the game that was exciting and engaging has basically been squished down to the level of another World Quest.
Personally, they can make choreghast as tough as they want.
Make it near impossible, I don’t care. Just take soul ash out. Then the rest of us can avoid it while the “challenge junkies” can beat their heads against a wall all day.
I’m sorry, but if you ever feel like this game is a “job” then simply dont play it. The content is supposed to be challenging and just because it’s difficult to complete doesnt mean they should nerf it so that everyone should be able to complete it. A game is only fun as long as there is something to aspire to, you sound like the type of person who would call playing Darksouls a “job”… it’s not, it’s just a hard game that feels good when you beat it.
Simple answer: Because they failed horrendously in explaining what it was and how it worked and how people were supposed to move through the tower. The game also truly and absolutely failed (arguably by design) to articulate the correct measures of success. RNG through anima powers vs boss types vs class abilities and skills vs class design leaves a MASSIVE room for widely disparate experiences throughout the playerbase as a whole. Throw in composition in groups vs solo play…
ooof, its really easy to see how some classes, or comps or specs might have an awesome time, whilst others might find themselves charging through the tower only to hit an almost impenetrable wall.
If we want to be constructive we need to understand at least this point. This isnt really players crying or even wanting everything handed to them. The problem is that the system seemed abitrary and to an extent unfair.
With these changes, perhaps then we can start a more nuanced balancing process and start on a less nebulous footing, which should hopefully see decent results in the twisting corridors.
Explain to me how Twisting Corridors is a seperate mode entirely? I didn’t play the beta, so I don’t have first hand experience, but from what I’ve read and watched, its a ‘roguelike’ with phantasma as a currency, anima powers you can collect, an end-of-floor mini boss, a shop every 3rd floor, and a major boss every 6th floor. Only differences I can find is its tuned higher (for more geared players) and is longer vis-à-vis having 18 floors instead of 6. Can you prove to me that there is something else differentiating it from regular Torghast?
If you can’t, we might as well apply the same bull**** logic to dungeons. Mythic+ is a seperate mode entirely (its really the same but apparently higher scaling and taking longer are enough to make them seperate) and therefore Mythic is the highest difficulty of a singular dungeon, so they should be retuned to require around 200 ilvl to complete for non-elite players (or players that picked the wrong class), because they need to be exclusive, as they are the hardest difficulty. If you don’t like it, just wait till 9.2 when the catch-up mechanics are in and then they’ll be easy cause you’ll outgear them with WQ gear.
I know you’re just going to claim I’m “grasping at straws” again because you can’t form a real argument for why Torghast 1-8 should be its own hard mode, when its not supposed to be, because that’s what TC is for.
I really want more than just soul ash in Torghast. I really think it would be the perfect place to put some casual gear drops that are worth getting for those of us who will not be doing mythic plus. Obviously lower quality, but would be great to advance up the tower and get better gear drops the higher you get.
You’re a rogue… Soloing Layer 6 last week was such a pain. I dont want to spend 60 minutes dying to a boss I literally cannot beat to get NOTHING in return.
Thank you!.. The idea that not everyone can complete this content right now and may need better gear, a lot of skill, and some luck for the stars to align IS GOOD. A game is not rewarding or fun if it’s a faceroll… it’s just a boring slog. Everyone who made bliz cave in on this dont realize that taking this kind of content and trivializing it will simply create another Islands issue. Not everyone should be able to do the more difficult parts of the game without putting in the time and effort of those who do.
Except that you didn’t have to do the high layers to get your currency. The vast majority of it came from the low layers. Somehow I don’t think that 40 ash from a layer 8 is going to make that much of a difference for the 5k you need to fully upgrade a legendary.
Yes, this exactly. They’ve now ruined Torghast. I see no reason to ever do it again this patch after next week when I get enough ash to finish getting rank 4 on my legendary. It was actually fun on Tuesday and now it’s a joke.
Don’t you f***ing dare compare Torghast to Dark Souls. The difference is, that in WoW, no amount of “git gud” can lead you to overcome certain challenges, you also HAVE to get better gear. In Dark Souls, you can beat the entire game at SL 1 with no equipment. I’d have been ok with Torghast being difficult if it actually required learning mechanics and improving; but instead we got a version that was only “difficult” because it was a braindead, mechanic-less, overtuned slog.
Now it can actually be a somewhat entertaining, slightly undertuned, little side dungeon, and for people like you who want to pretend that its your skill at your class and not your ilvl that carrying you through the content, you’ll have twisting corridors soon.
Because different people have different levels of gear. There are people who cleared heroic CN last week and have a bunch of 213 gear. There are people who ran a ton of M+ and have a bunch of gear from that. The gear is available even if you don’t have it and the top end shouldn’t be constrained to keep from doing content you’re not ready for. The fact that layers 7 and 8 came out with /mythic raiding/ should have been a clue as to what they were intended for.
Layer 7 is when it got hard for me at ilvl 171. I tried once when it was released and didn’t make it off the first floor. Personally I was waiting for another crack at it with better gear later this week after running more mythics, getting vault gear, and weekly quest gear.
With these changes and better upfront anima powers this is gonna be way easier IMO. Kind of Sadge about it (Yes I know twitch word) KEKW
No offense but don’t even compare wow to dark souls. Dark souls is designed from the ground up to be challenging. Its designed to kill you over and over until you love it like a freaky masochist. Wow was never like that ever. The hardest mythic difficulty in wow is childs play to what I’ve solod in dark souls/bloodborne.
I think it got a fair bit overtuned (especially for tanks), but now it is way too easy to the point it isn’t really that fun or engaging.
I just did a fracture 8 run where I had over 40 anima powers and didn’t even buy much on floor 3 besides the anima vessel. I felt like a god with nothing to fear. By contrast, me and a friend was doing the 7 yesterday and barely got the floor 5 boss by the skin of our teeth (literally the big stompy was coming) and the only way we got it was a cheesy jump kite strat that really shouldn’t have worked in the first place.
Blizzard said floor 8 would feel like floor 6, but in reality it honestly felt like floor 3 or 4. I’m all for the plight of the casual and content should be more accessible and not just the exclusive “right” of the elite, but this is honestly a nerf way too far.
Specifically I think anima powers drop too much and the nerf to the affixes is too much…but the less frequency of the assassin spawns as well as the general less lethality of stuff.
Edit - I also have done the 8 upper wing too and while it was a teensy bit harder, it still wasn’t anywhere near that challenging.
