its getting really over the the top in recent months with text thats against fed law in the usa. I know a lot of people report when people are talking about doing harm just because of their race. People talking openly about doing harm to children in a sexual way. They talking about genocide.
wow is gonna be the next roblox. its time to actually overhaul the report system because this is just out of control. it shouldnt take 20 reports to get rid of someone talking about doing this type of stuff to people and children
All reports enter a queue to be handled by the next available GM. Sometimes it can take a while for that report to get to the front of the queue, but there isn’t anything that can be done about that.
Certain reporting categories are prioritised, but there’s still a queue.
The best thing to do is report it, ignore that character (which will also ignore all of their other characters*), and move on. The report will be reviewed and if there’s a violation of the rules, they will be actioned.
*Note: Ignoring another character will only apply to the character you are logged in on. There are addons available to make it so you won’t need to ignore that character from all of your other ones.
If you feel the chat violates the rules, reporting does put that person on ignore until you log back in later. Or you can use an addon like Badboy. However Blizzard does not manually regulate chat, it is only reactive to reports, there are way to many servers and channels to do so efficiently anyway. Also chat is at will for the most part, if Blizzard does not receive reports then it likely is chat the community is comfortable with. However, if you feel it violates the rules, then by all means report it.
It might not seem like it, but it really only takes one report. Multiple reports in a short period of time can place a temporary squelch on someone until it is reviewed by a GM, and it is then either removed or they are either issued a silence or a game suspension. They’ll even go up to an account closure.
Best we can recommend is that you make sure you keep reporting everything. We see it here all the time that people get slapped down hard for saying less than what you are reporting them for.
i understand this it takes a while but in the mean time preds get to do w/e they want for a week or 2 before they make a new account. Hopefully they make a ai system or something. like i said its so out of control now and reports dont do anything
This is false. If people are not reporting (usually due to thinking that reports don’t matter), that’s when nothing gets done.
If enough people (far less than 20) report the inappropriate chat, those reported get an automated squelch which prevent all public chat on all their characters on their account. This is how you stop them.
Once the chat is reviewed, a GM will look at where they are as far as infractions go and assign the next level. If they’ve already had a silence, they get a suspension for a week. If they’ve already had that the account actions increase greatly, up to and including account closure.
We’ve seen account closures here from chat. Reporting works. Encourage others to not respond and just report inappropriate chat.
Please note that the system counts reports from an individual account only once, even if you switch characters to report again. This prevents one person from spamming the reporting system. It takes time for a GM to review reports, so action is not instant.
If something is a real life threat, terrorism, or child abuse please use the website report options if the one you need is not in the in-game drop down list. Blizzard will need:
Character name
Server
Chat channel
Time, date, time zone
Nature of chat infraction
Here is the Real Life threat ticket link. Only use if it is a real true threat.
It’s easy to say that about any game with social interaction, to be honest.
Now, you also need to consider that Blizzard puts systems in place (mature language filter, parental controls), but if parents are letting their children play WoW with full access to the chat channels, that’s really on the parent.
The language filter only exists to prevent someone from seeing offensive chat and isn’t a free pass for someone to break the rules, as stated by blues previously.
I get where youre coming from, and agree with you, but there is more to it.
reporting doesnt put them on ignore and its a full time job with how often it happens. maybe 1 in 100 people will report these days. whats worse is if you tell others to ignore and report the trolls mass report you and you got to a wait for a gm to unsilence you
it’s temporary, but it does put them on an ignore. This goes away when you log out. Only using the /ignore function works full time, but is limited in the number of users you can ignore. If the rules are not being followed, and those users accounts are silenced, suspended while they may return, if the continue to violate rules the account could be closed, that is between the user and blizzard.
You really don’t need to go around publicly inciting others. You can only report what you suspect is rules breaking. If others do report it also, that is great.
some really good info from mvp’s but i will circle back to the type of chat i see on the regular now would get you arrested. I understand where you coming from but you also got to look at it from the other point. other companies are starting to face legal consequences for providing safe havens for online predators and racists threats.
I did here something on reddit that add ons like raider io is preventing reports from going through and this would make a lot more since if thats true
My point is that Blizzard provides options for parents, but ultimately it’s up to the parents to be monitoring their childs game play / online social interactions. Sadly many don’t, either due to apathy or ignorance.
If a player feels threatened by another player, they can report it to the authorities. Blizzard will work with their investigation.
Personally I don’t think Blizzard is providing a safe haven for these types. On the contrary.
I report when I see it in chats, and then move on. I’m here to play a game. It’s only a full time “job” reporting if you let it.
I’m making a point to you that it’s not all one-sided like you claim it is, since you feel they don’t do anything (or enough), or fast enough for your liking.
when people commit online crimes yes blizzard must take quick actions. there is no defending that. this is exactly what got roblox into trouble. i understand what youre saying but this is a different level and im trying to make blizzard aware of the escalation thats taking place. im done trying though.
For the record, you’re posting in a player help player forum. This isn’t a feedback forum. You can certainly use the in-game feedback tool, that gets to the developers.
I think it would also be naive to think that Blizzards legal team isn’t aware though.
This can only be done in game, via the report UI. They recently added more options to report. I appreciate your willingness to keep the game safe though. In the meantime, I can only reiterate that the game chat is not regulated, there are way to many channels to monitor for full time in game moderation, continue to report as you can. If violations are found GM staff and legal will respond.
That’s in a thread about chat warnings, but it appears to state that an automated chat warning occurs first (the in-game notice), and that a GM won’t/can’t look at reports until enough reports accumulate to generate a ticket for review? If so then it would take more than one report =\
did a experiment and it came down to a add on raider io preventing reports from going through which is why it seemed like nothing was being done. disabled it now if you report it ignores and actually sends off the report
