Unlock Elite & Challenge Mode transmog in retail if earned in classic

I normally post from my Classic warrior, but forums are acting weird and won’t let me switch. But I figure I’ll post anyways.

At this point it’s safe to assume MoP Classic will follow after Cata Classic is done, and with that comes a very unique opportunity for Blizz to “preserve” prestige/transmog gatekeeping, while giving people a new opportunity to finally earn it & bring new players into classic t’boot.

What am I talking about?
If it wasn’t clear yet- I think any limited-time gear earned in Classic should be unlocked in Retail as a reward. For now, this only pertains to Elite PvP sets- but will apply to Challenge Mode sets when MoP Classic and maybe even Artifact appearances in Legion Classic one day.

  • Some of these sets have been locked away by the sands of time for over a decade, and are in hot demand
  • The requirement to unlock these sets will be balance-appropriate to the difficulty/skill needed to unlock them when they were originally available
  • This serves as a healthy way to skill-gate prestigious items, while letting new players try their hand at getting them
  • It brings new and old players alike to play Classic more and spice up the world a bit

As someone who has very much wanted this feature for WoW, I have done my homework to see the most common rebuttal to players who ask for these limited-time sets to return is often “Nope. Should’ve been there when it was available”.

Now, my opinion of that sentiment aside, I think Classic presents a unique opportunity for players to experience what the class design, balance, and mechanics were all like back then. To that point, if there’s a reward they’d hypothetically want on their retail characters, I feel there’s no better incentive than asking them to do the whole 9-yards; making a character, levelling, questing, grinding, joining a guild, etc.

Anecdotally, I have a few Elite PvP sets to my name that I love to mog into and /flex with. Same goes for Challenge Mode sets. I like that they feel like a cosmetic trophy that I can show off, even if nobody else actually gives a sh*t lol. But I also like the idea that anyone else can get them, but only if they go through the same rigorous test of skills that I had to do. A rite of passage. After all, once < Old Expansion > Classic passes, that unique opportunity to get those sets again goes away forever, once more.

So to that string of logic, I personally plan on grinding out for the Elite Ruthless Gladiator Warrior set when Firelands comes out. Simply because I never got it back in the day (I was a teenager who watched Swifty on YouTube because I sucked at PvP myself). But since Retail is still my main WoW game between Classic seasons, It sure would be awesome to have these classic accomplishments uniformally granted to my account.

I plan on getting that Elite set even if this feature request never happens, but I think many others would join in with a little more care if they could show off these sets and such on retail as well. Seeing as most Classic players I meet do exercise some degree of alternation between Classic and Retail anyways. Why not have your achievements across both games be displayable across either?

Something to consider. I think it’s a great compromise between “bring elite/CM sets back” and “no, you should’ve done them at the time because the game was so different back then”.

It’s an interesting question and of course a reasonable ask from many points of view. I remember the same sorts of conversations happening when Classic first launched around maybe Rank 14 titles or some of the unobtainable mounts from Vanilla.

Will Classic progression ever eventually converge into Retail and bring with it all those things we didn’t know we had a second chance to get? Would people have done things differently had they known?

I don’t know how things are going to happen and I’m not sure how I feel about this topic personally, but there’s a lot to consider when pondering whether Classic should impact Retail or Retail should impact Classic.

I feel like until it’s officially stated by blizzard, it’s safe to assume it won’t happen. But at the same time, if it is retroactively added, it sure would suck to know that you missed your second chance at getting a certain thing you missed in retail and now again in classic.

For sure. I think Blizzard have really designed the WoW loop so that many players circulate between Classic, Retail, SoD, or just stick to one or two, and while I have no issue with keep it all separate (mainly for SoD), I think there is some novelty in being able to create a cosmetic incentive for more people to participate in Classic Progressive servers again. But alas, whether it happens or not isn’t a huge deal. For me at least it would definitely act as greater incentive to play Classic more though personally

They did something similar to this in MoP Remix. They gave people the opportunity to get recolors of rare or discontinued tmogs, and even the chance to get the rare Tusks of Mannoroth shoulders.

I think it’s a great idea to give retail players a reason to play Classic and give them exclusive or discontinued mogs.

They also gave a mount in Retail for completing the DK starting quests in Wrath Classic, so it’s not as if there hasn’t been any movement here, for sure.

Maybe. I personally lean towards pushing the game trajectories in different directions, giving choices for a diverse range of preferences, and being able to double down on what differentiates each path, but I can also point to things about any version of the game that I like, so…

They did? Dang, I didn’t know that D:

And that’s fair. I can see why you say that. I just think it’d be a neat way to reward players for playing Classic.

Yeah. I’m not sure that making Classic appeal to those who prefer Retail is an overall good thing. Like should we be pushing to homogenize the communities, or cater to them separately? I’m not saying my perspective is correct or that I have any better answer to that than anyone else; it’s a genuine question that I sometimes consider.

Something that I have thought would be interesting as well would be some additional lobby games (like arenas, bgs, dungeons, raids) that we could queue into on characters from any version of the game, and gain rewards that are maybe only useful within that content.

This might end up creating interesting metas of cross-polination, combining certain class combinations from different game versions. And it could be done in a way that’s completely opt-in/optional and only impacts the character’s progression/items/etc. within that lobby game environment.

Whether that’s interesting enough to spend the resources to develop, I’d be skeptical, but I personally think it’d be neat.

I’m pretty sure that Classic and retail are simply going to merge at some point soon. Wouldn’t be surprised if that was in later 2025. They don’t want to keep Classic going. They think we get tired of playing the same games, but people still play original Spyro and original Halo and Doom and Zelda and all those games.

no. keep my collections separate.
